I bought this a week or so ago and it's had almost constant use since then, with no problems at all. I'm running on Win Xp, so that probably explains why I've avoided the compatibility issues. It is slightly noisier than other external storage devices I've owned, but what it lacks in sleek design and an off button, it makes up for in price. If shaving £20 off your budget matters then I'd certainly advise buying this solid little unit.

I bought this drive because it was the cheapest gb per pound. It is very quiet because it has no fan built in. Had it for 3 months now and I am delighted with it. I have filled 3/4 of the space already with no problem at all. Operation is very quiet, HD switches off when not in use. Data transfer at par with USB 2.0. This one is highly recommended.

I use these drives and earlier generation Maxtor drives at work and haven't had any issues with them so I was surprised to see the negative review. A couple of reviews were complaining because the disc was 40gb short when they came to use it. These reviews are slightly misleading as in order to use a disc drive it first has to be formatted and doing so reduces the amount of space on a disc.

Formatting creates an index that the computer uses to find the physical location of your files on the disc. This requires that a portion of the discs capacity is reserved for this table. However as there is more than one way a disc can be formatted and the size of this table changes depending on the filing system the computer uses when it formats the disc.

This means discs and all computer storage systems, are sold with their raw unformatted capacity shown as the discs size. The manufacture can't sell the drive as having for example 460gb as that would only happen if the user only formatted it using one of windows disc systems for example.

Owned this drive for a few weeks now, filled it to the brim with no problems.
For all you who worry about the lack of ON/OFF switch DONT. The drive goes into sleep mode when not being used and winds down.

Im off to buy 2 more now.

I have three of these drives. The oldest has been in constant use (24/7) for three months. I have been archiving my CD collection to MP3 in iTunes and my collection of photographic slides and negatives using a film scanner that runs through the night.
The drives connect to my PCs running XP Pro without any problems. They are preformatted with the NTFS filing system which reports 465.76GB in XP's Computer Mangement/Disc Management window. This apparent loss of capacity is consistent with all other drives I have used and is down to different ways the industry measures the same parameter!
The lack of an On/Off switch is annoying as in my application the drives will not be in constant use (once all the data has been archived). If the PC is turned off the drives do not spin down as they do during idle periods when it is on, so they have to be physically unplugged from the mains. The outer cases get warm during use, not hot, and they are quiet. Mine are placed on non-slip rubber matting to prevent the desk becoming a sounding board. The only real failing is the clip-on detachable base. This does not fit properly and there is a real danger the drive could be knocked off it - the short fall to a hard desktop could spell disaster. Other than that they are great value for money, reliable and very easy to set up.

Yes Its Not Fully 500GB but non of the external drive usually are - probably as this device has a built-in recycle bin and install procedure.

be warey of the plugging in process - if you plug the power cable into the device with power swithed on it will usually blow a fuse and no longer work.

On the plus side i use mine to actually watch videos from - streaming to my PS3 - as long as you are in a ventalated area it doesn't heat up much, also i have had mine for a long time now with now problems at all other than the previously mentioned and i use this device for very long periods of time - it has sometimes been in constant use for over 2 days and not a hint of wear or tear

could it do with a power on/off switch ? yes.
does it really matter ? not if you avoid the above.
value for money ? yes.
sturdy ? yes.
constant use ? ok in ventalated area.
drive access ? could be quicker, but nothing to complain about.

all in all would i recommend ? well i have 3 of them so yes.
