Kept running out of disk space - but that is now sorted with this bargain drive. Arrived in a few days. You just get the drive, no software, manuals or screws, but that wasn't a problem for me - installs fine with Windows XP - no special software required & manual & instructions available on the Maxtor website. Fitted OK (but a bit fiddly) in the spare slot in my HP Pavilion, following the instructions which came with my PC - the PC had 4 spare screws in the front panel that I could use to secure the drive, power & ribbon (IDE) fitted easily enough.

I purchased this drive because I could check on the Maxtor site that it had the right connections to fit on my computer. The Maxtor site also describes the procedure to go through to set up & format the drive which I followed easily enough.

Great value & no problems. Can't hear any additional drive noise & now have oodles of spare disk space to give my old PC a new lease of life.

I've been building computers (including PCs and servers) for over 24 years and have used many Maxtor drives - I love them. In fact I was sorry to hear Western Digital loved them enough to buy the whole company. When I went looking for a PATA (IDE) drive to replace the failing one on an old PC I was delighted to find this Maxtor being sold for on £11 - bargain! The old drive I needed to replace was also a Maxtor and that was manufactured in 2002. Don't get me wrong, the old drive had been retired for a few years before being brought back to replace another dead drive. What you should take away from this is that Maxtor drives are good, I've used a lot of them and I trust them.

So why is this one bad. I think it's down to the way it's been handled. This particular drive was manufactured in 2006 and still in its factory sealed anti static bag. The vacuum was even still intact! The one thing that immediately struck me when I opened the package I received from Amazon was that the drive was poorly packed. It came in a small jiffy bag in a small Amazon carton with a little paper wadding - completely inadequate packing for sending through the royal mail (actually via Amazon Prime but still royal mail). Disc drives are fragile. I'd be worried about dropping one onto my desk in the packing this one came in - let alone send it in the mail. Anyway, the fact that it's been around since 2006 means it may have been knocked many times before it even got put into the mail.

Before buying, I'd read many reviews from other buyers of this "batch" of drives (many good) so I plugged it into a PC and tried it anyway. The PC could talk to it ok but the drive couldn't hold any data. I tried it on a second PC. Still no good. So I'm sending this drive back and trying another one.

In conclusion £11 for 160GB Maxtor PATA hard disc drive is a good deal. If you do get a bad one, send it back and try again.

Inserted this in the PC on arrival and all working fine as a second backup drive.
Be careful not to confuse this drive with the serial SATA drives. The ATA drives used to be referred to as the IDE Hard Drives and have the wide ribbon connection. Unfortunately they are now referred to as ATA.... this is a bit too close in my mind to SATA, the new serial drives with a small connection plug and so people are often ordering the wrong ones.

Ok it's a 160GB drive for a tenner, no complaints here, works perfectly fine, plugged straight in and was loading Ubuntu on it within minutes, it would have gotten 5 stars but for the packaging! A bubble wrap envelope, fine no problem, but as the postman can slot it through the letter box it can drop the couple of feet on to the floor!
which is not very good for hard drives, they don't like being dropped, it really buggers them up! i would suggest a slightly wider than a standard letter box shaped cardboard box maybe so the postman has to hand it over? Lucky i have a cage on my door or it would have dropped three feet on to a concrete floor, i doubt it would have worked after that?

I got as far as ordering this (which looks like a good bargain) before realising that the description didn't state that the drive was a 3.5" one (good for desktops and PVRs, but not for laptops which generally use a 2.5" drive). Just be aware!

These are absolutely not new drives, I build Raid machines and have extremely sensitive software that monitors drive performance, it also states previous use buy the hour, week and month of any particular drive, I bought a 2nd simply to be sure my first purchase wasn't a 1 off and again well over 12mths previous use with extremely high Read, Seek and Write error rates demonstrating a high probability of imminent drive failure, so will definitely not be purchasing further items from this particular supplier, so yes I guess you get exactly what you pay for

It is what it is. It's an old fashioned hard drive and it's not that quiet but it does what I want. I needed a PATA drive for an old PVR and there aren't that many about for this sort of price and 7200 speed so as the title says, no complaints.
