Run DMC were one of the most important groups of the 1980s and amongst the first pioneers of mainstream hip-hop. They helped establish a style and an attitude which proved irresistibly successful, influential and much imitated, not just in rap circles but also further afield. More than any other act, Run DMC were responsible for the mass popularity of hip-hop over the past few decades, effortlessly setting trends and pushing back musical barriers. They were innovators in both music and street style, introducing hip-hop to heavy rock and metal. They moved it from a singles only to an album based art form and they were the first rappers to earn gold, platinum and multi-platinum album sales. In truth, their importance transcended the hip-hop genre, but within that field they could claim the status of some of rock and pop's greatest. Moreover, they achieved all this without resorting to lazy hip-hop cliche, rap shorthand or commercial cynicism. This amazing story is all broken down here.
