This release falls in between Budakhan Mindphone and Selection Sixteen, not only chronologically but also in style. Beginning with 'Song: Our Underwater Torch', a track very remeniscent of Budakhan's 'Iambic 5 Poetry'... slow, freeform, almost sloppy drums with a delicate organ melody on top, the record follows Budakhan's pattern again, with what sounds like a live drum'n'bass track - fast breaks, but real drums. However, track three, 'You're Going Down' is more reminscent of the fusion jazz of 'Music is Rotted One Note', and 'Cranium Oxide' sounds like one of the random sound fillers on Selection Sixteen. Then follow three remixes, in more traditional IDM styles, done by various other Warp and IDM artists. The mixture of freeform downtempo/jazz and electronica lines you up for 'Selection Sixteen', the following album, but in this case, the downtempo is in more abundance. The quality is not consistent throughout, but it's an interesting listen, and an essential purchase to those interested in this era of Squarepusher's career.
