Biography

Frankie Goes To Hollywood… they didn’t so much capture the zeitgeist, as kidnap it, tie it up, hold it down, and have their way with it.
Certainly, back in the mid-eighties, they were omnipresent in the press, on the street, (due to Paul Morley’s brilliant hijacking of designer Katherine Hamnett’s ‘Choose Life’ t-shirt range) and even on TV and radio, at ... Read more in Amazon's Frankie Goes To Hollywood Store

Product Description

FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD Maximum Joy (2000 UK Greatest Hits 20-track 2-CD album set including a 7-track bonus disc featuring mixes by Sander Klienberg Club 69 Rob Searle and Apollo 440 picture sleeve ZTT165CD)

Amazon.co.uk

Spurred on by the success of the Rob Searle mixes of "The Power of Love" during early 2000, Maximum Joy collects together the best tracks by the band, along with a second disc of new remixes of Frankie's better known material. As is highlighted by the collection, the band's early work mixed together electro-synth pop, with a provocative image focused around love, sex and pleasure, never more evident than on their debut album Welcome To The Pleasuredome. By the group's second album, Liverpool, the image had become diluted, with the hedonism of their music being replaced by anger ("Rage Hard" and "Watching The Wildlife"). However the group weren't just a focal point for producer Trevor Horn's ego, as is demonstrated by their version of "San José" and their gothic reinterpretation of "Ferry Cross The Mersey". The remixes prove that there is still plenty of life left in the Frankie classics, with the Nalin & Kane remix of "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" retaining the mystery and fear of the original but with a stripped down simplicity. --John Galilee

There are three Frankie Goes to Hollywood Greatest Hits Collections - Bang!, Maximum Joy and most recently Frankie Says Greatest, and I hovered a bit between the three of them. I eventually settled for Maximum Joy, not because of the extra CD of remixes but because it contained their cover version of San Jose, which has always been one of my favourite songs on their debut album. Is it sung by Paul Rutherford?

The first CD is outstanding, and probably the best available compilation of their work. It contains all their hits, together with fantastic album tracks such as Maximum Joy, San Jose, Ferry Cross the Mersey and War. The Ferry Cross the Mersey included here is the debut album track, not the later charity single version with other artists produced by SAW. The audio quality is stunning. I have never heard these familiar songs sound better, even Relax which I must have heard umpteen times over the years! They are in their original album versions here on CD 1, not in extended or remixed versions.

By contrast, the second CD is all remixed long versions of the songs, including the hit remix of The Power of Love.

If you are considering which of the Frankie compilations to go for, on balance I would recommend this one - the song selection on CD1 is all you will need.

I never thought there would be a better album than Welcome to the Pleasure Dome. Not only does Maximum Joy surpass the original boundary of musical excellence...it takes some of FGTH's classic tracks to entirely new heights with slight deviations in some of the tracks, making them much more profound and adding to their sheer brilliance...
An excellent album.....thank you to FGTH!

If you've not yet bought BANG - then this is the FGTH disk for you... all the best tracks of the groups 2 albums - and a mixed bag of new remixes on the second CD.
However, die-hard fans who have already got the originals - either buy Holly Johnson's album SOULSTREAM instead ... or get Nasher's Album RIPE .....
