Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix Car Seat Base - IsoFix Installation

Car seats and bases which use the IsoFix anchor points are one of the safest systems available for fixing baby car seats into your car. Featured in almost all new cars, the IsoFix system works by securing your child’s car seat base to two fixed anchorage points in your car.

Offering enhanced safety benefits and features, the IsoFix base is fast, and is easy to install and remove. Eliminating the need for seatbelt fastenings, it simply clicks into position. Once secured, it provides a solid and permanent connection between your car seat or base and the car body.

We bought this along with the Maxi-Cosi Pebble carrier for our new baby. At first I was put off by the price, but after more than a year of use I have to admit it has been worth it.

The base is fairly simple to fit, however it also very easy to get it wrong (which might have been what happened to the one-star reviewer). If you get it wrong then it will bleep at you; especially when turning corners, when the weight of the carrier on the unit shifts it enough to trigger the sensors. The way it works is that it has three sets of sensors which tell it/you if it is properly fixed - one on the leg, one on the Isofix struts, and one for the carrier. I had no problems fitting it to the middle seat of my C4 Grand Picasso, but when I moved it to our Ford Fiesta (current model) it took a few goes to get it right; until then I was also greeted with regular beeps. In this case, adjusting the length of the leg solved the problem. We've moved it between cars a number of times, and it's a very simple operation - retract the Isofix struts, remove from car, extend struts again, clip struts into other car seat and push into place (adjusting leg as necessary). Job done.

Once you've got the base properly fitted, then it's a simple matter of dropping the carrier onto the base - the weight of the carrier is generally enough to lock it in place, although you may find you need to wiggle it a bit at first until you get used to it (took me about a week, my wife slightly longer). Again, getting this bit wrong will result in you being bleeped at; a handy display on the base even tells you which bit you've got wrong. Once in place, you can then easily slide the carrier into whichever position you want - lower for a sleeping baby, higher for a wakey baby.

This is a long review because I'm hoping to help remove some of the myths and confusion around car seats, upcoming regulations and some of the things to consider before parting with your money. This review is for:

    - Soon to be parents
    - Parents of children under 4
    - Parents intending to have more children.

    About the FamilyFix’s requirements
    ############################################################################
The FamilyFix base will only fit cars with ISOFix points and will ONLY work with the following car seats.

    1. Maxi-Cosi Pebble (0 to 1 years old)
    2. Maxi-Cosi Pearl (9 months to 4 years old) fixed car seat.
    3. Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix) (0 to 1 years old) not recommended since you can buy the cheaper and just as safeEasyFix base instead.)

You can only use the car seat battle for the Pebble, you cannot use your car's seat belt as an alternative fitting for the FamilyFix Base or the Pearl itself. The MaxiCosi website has a great guide to check your car's suitability.

A picture perfect instruction manual guides you through fitting the base and seat taking me only 10 minutes on the first attempt.

I bought this because I'm aware I own one of the silliest cars if you have just started a family - an E46 3-series vert. Without this 'comfort access system I would have to open the windows on one side, lean in through the very confined window area and do up the three-point seatbelt to wrap around the pebble. My car has the seatbelt going the wrong way (from centre to side) which doesn't help either! With this system my life is so easy: lift the pebble, put it through into the back seat, and without even looking I can get it click. From the second time I used it. Now I have had this for four months and I have only praise for this product. The green lights and the click sounds helps confirm the seat is well secured too.

However, all luxuries come at a cost. I paid £110 for this base, which is not cheap, plus £107 for an out-going coloured pebble, and i frankly i might not buy the Group 1 Peal seat as the cheapest i can find (around £130 at this time) is still considerably more than some other group 1 seats with built-in ISOFIX (e.g. Britax has one on sale at around £119 every now and then). you wont take the Pearl in and out and fix onto a stroller so you don't have to get the Pearl to have the comfort in accessing. weighing the ups and downs, i still think it does have its value on convenience and safety (don't want to risk getting attacked and baby taken while I spent time focusing on tying up the seat) basis.

Overall speaking, I would say given the toy car i'm stuck with, my life would have been miserable without it. Would recommend to those who has two door cars. It will prove a God send! For parents with cars more than two doors, I would suggest you consider the long term cost and judge whether it is worth - as this system will benefit you mostly with the Group 0 pebble seat.
