The Maxi-Cosi Pebble (0 to 13 kg) infant car seat and the Maxi-Cosi Pearl (9 to 18 kg) child car seat both fit onto the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix Base. All Maxi-Cosi car seats are comprehensively tested to ensure that they are perfectly safe. But the type of car seat you buy depends on the age, make and model of your car - some are designed to work with ISOFIX anchor points that connect to the car's ISOFIX system, others on their own with the car's three-point seat belt and some can be used on bases that secure by either method. Additionally, you may need to consider your car seat choice if you own multiple cars and their individual fitting mechanisms.

The Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix Base has been approved according to the most recent guidelines of the ECE R 44/04, the European standard for car safety seats.

What is ISOFIX?

ISOFIX (International Standards Organisation FIX) is widely recognised as the safest way to install a child car seat. It is estimated that a two-thirds of car seats are incorrectly fitted, but ISOFIX is designed to be user-friendly, it makes it almost impossible to get the installation wrong.

Most cars come fitted with ISOFIX connection points located at the back of the vehicle seat. These are permanently connected to the body of the car and your ISOFIX car seat attaches securely to these connection points. Some cars even come fitted with a third point that prevents the seat from tipping forward.

Click and Go

Fitting your Maxi-Cosi car seat to the ISOFIX system is easy; some click directly into these points, while others clip to the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix or EasyFix Base. All Maxi-Cosi ISOFIX car seats and bases are fitted with a height-adjustable support leg that rests on the floor of the car. This means that the seats and bases can be used in most cars made in the past few years. Indicators confirm that the car seat is correctly fitted before you take to the road.

Why Choose the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix?
  • Lasting Value and Convenience: only one base is needed from birth to 18 kg (or birth to around 3.5 years), as the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix Base (ISOFIX) can be used with the Maxi-Cosi Pebble infant car seat (or Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix) and the Maxi-Cosi Pearl toddler car seat. This also becomes additionally convenient if you own multiple vehicles, all fitted with ISOFIX attachments
  • Easy to Install: it takes a split second to attach the car seat to the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix Base. Popping your child into the seat itself is almost as quick, thanks to the stay-open harness
  • Light and Sound Indicators: these safety indicators ensure the base and the seat are installed correctly and that you're good to go. The first green light signals the correct fit of the base onto the ISOFIX anchoring points in the car. The second light confirms that the support leg has been clicked into the right height and position. Finally, the third green light confirms that the Maxi-Cosi Pebble (Group 0+) or Pearl (Group 1) car seat has clicked securely onto the base. Check the proper installation of the product by pressing the test button. Never use this product if one of the LED indicators is red
  • Comfort: When used with the Maxi-Cosi Pebble, CabrioFix or Pearl car seats, the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix Base offers a variety of recline positions for the comfort of your baby

Safety Instructions
  • Airbags for Rearward-facing Car Seats: the airbag must always be switched off when using the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix together with the Maxi-Cosi Pebble or Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix on the front passenger seat
  • Airbags for Forward-Facing Car Seats: the airbag must also always be switched off or the passenger seat placed in the rearmost position, when using the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix Base together with the Maxi-Cosi Pearl on the front passenger seat
  • Maintenance: maintain the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix regularly. Check to make sure all electronic parts are functioning properly and that the batteries have enough voltage by pressing the test button
  • Support Leg: the Maxi-Cosi FamilyFix support leg must always be unfolded completely, locked and placed in the forward-most position. The support leg is important as it not only adds stability to the base, but also limits rotation in case of an accident.

We bought this along with the Maxi-Cosi Pebble carrier for our new baby. At first I was put off by the price, but after more than a year of use I have to admit it has been worth it.

The base is fairly simple to fit, however it also very easy to get it wrong (which might have been what happened to the one-star reviewer). If you get it wrong then it will bleep at you; especially when turning corners, when the weight of the carrier on the unit shifts it enough to trigger the sensors. The way it works is that it has three sets of sensors which tell it/you if it is properly fixed - one on the leg, one on the Isofix struts, and one for the carrier. I had no problems fitting it to the middle seat of my C4 Grand Picasso, but when I moved it to our Ford Fiesta (current model) it took a few goes to get it right; until then I was also greeted with regular beeps. In this case, adjusting the length of the leg solved the problem. We've moved it between cars a number of times, and it's a very simple operation - retract the Isofix struts, remove from car, extend struts again, clip struts into other car seat and push into place (adjusting leg as necessary). Job done.

Once you've got the base properly fitted, then it's a simple matter of dropping the carrier onto the base - the weight of the carrier is generally enough to lock it in place, although you may find you need to wiggle it a bit at first until you get used to it (took me about a week, my wife slightly longer). Again, getting this bit wrong will result in you being bleeped at; a handy display on the base even tells you which bit you've got wrong. Once in place, you can then easily slide the carrier into whichever position you want - lower for a sleeping baby, higher for a wakey baby.

This is the second one of these we have bought. The first is still in use after 18 months with both Pebble and Pearl seats and now we have another baby on the way we will need both at once.
There is a knack to learning how to fit the base but once you know how it works it's really easy to swap them about.
I find it much easier to flip out the seat and base as two units as opposed to the much bulkier one piece Priori XP we also have. We have two cars so have a seat in each one.
The baby seat is a joy to just drop into place and lift out without disturbing baby
Amazon is the cheapest place to buy despite price match offers (which I personally find offensive) and delivery is by the same company usually.

I bought this because I'm aware I own one of the silliest cars if you have just started a family - an E46 3-series vert. Without this 'comfort access system I would have to open the windows on one side, lean in through the very confined window area and do up the three-point seatbelt to wrap around the pebble. My car has the seatbelt going the wrong way (from centre to side) which doesn't help either! With this system my life is so easy: lift the pebble, put it through into the back seat, and without even looking I can get it click. From the second time I used it. Now I have had this for four months and I have only praise for this product. The green lights and the click sounds helps confirm the seat is well secured too.

However, all luxuries come at a cost. I paid £110 for this base, which is not cheap, plus £107 for an out-going coloured pebble, and i frankly i might not buy the Group 1 Peal seat as the cheapest i can find (around £130 at this time) is still considerably more than some other group 1 seats with built-in ISOFIX (e.g. Britax has one on sale at around £119 every now and then). you wont take the Pearl in and out and fix onto a stroller so you don't have to get the Pearl to have the comfort in accessing. weighing the ups and downs, i still think it does have its value on convenience and safety (don't want to risk getting attacked and baby taken while I spent time focusing on tying up the seat) basis.

Overall speaking, I would say given the toy car i'm stuck with, my life would have been miserable without it. Would recommend to those who has two door cars. It will prove a God send! For parents with cars more than two doors, I would suggest you consider the long term cost and judge whether it is worth - as this system will benefit you mostly with the Group 0 pebble seat.

I have been using this base with the Pebble for the last 9 months and it's been fantastic, no issues with it at all and makes it a lot easier to install the car seat. HOWEVER I have just been looking at the next car seat for my 9 month old (group 1) and have found that the only one compatible in the next size up is the Pearl. With recent advice being published that all car seats should be rear facing, as this is a lot safer, the Pearl car seat is only front facing. Research shows that facing rearwards is a safer option and from 2018 and the new i-Size law will require children to stay in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 15 months old. If I want to ensure my child is in the safest car seat position possible I will now have to buy a new ISOFIX i-Size base and car seat, based on the Maxi Cosi 2way Pearl options this will amount to around £300.OK so I should have researched this initially but I want to make people explicitly aware that this is the case so you don't make the same mistake I have as I have found purchasing the right car seat solution extremely confusing (not helped by Maxi-Cosi).
