Product Description

Maxi-Cosi Axiss--The rotating car seat

The Maxi-Cosi Axiss is designed to include the latest technology to ensure that you and your child enjoy your days out together. The Axiss is a forward-facing Group 1 car seat appropriate for children weighing from 9 kg to 18 kg, or 9 months to around 3.5 years.

Stay cool with a Maxi-Cosi Axiss Summer Cover, seen here in Ecru (sold separately)
Maxi-Cosi Axiss (Deep Blue)

As of September 2006, the use of safety belts in cars and approved child safety devices is mandatory for all children under 12 years old or less than 1.35 metres/4'5" in height for transport by car in the front and back seat. Every Maxi-Cosi car seat model--defined in the latest UN safety standard ECE R44.04--is specially designed for each age, as your child grows from birth to the age of 12.

  • It is always the weight not the age of a child that dictates the choice of car seat.
  • Do not buy or accept a second-hand car seat--you can never be certain of its full history and it may not provide adequate protection in an accident.

The Axiss offers 8 recline positions
The Maxi-Cosi Axiss car seat turns 90 degrees, right or left

Why Choose the Maxi-Cosi Axiss?

Rotating Car Seat: The Maxi-Cosi Axiss car seat turns 90 degrees, right or left, giving you easy access to your child to secure them in the car seat or take them out when you've arrived.

Installation : The Axiss is installed using a standard 3-point seat belt. It has an integral belt tensioning system with automatic locking system for secure installation. The seat belt tensioner ensures the seat belt is secured extra tightly.

Colour Indicator: This Group 1 car seat has a colour indicator to show that the seat is locked for driving.

Right Protection: The Maxi-Cosi Axiss also features Side Protection System for extra safety in case of side impact in a collision.

Headrest and Harness : Both, the adjustable headrest and harness of the Axiss go together to fit your growing child and offer optimum comfort and safety. The height of the headrest and harness belts can be adjusted at the same time at the front. Harness belt retention hooks keep the harness out of the way when placing your child or taking him/her out of the seat.

Recline Positions: The Maxi-Cosi Axiss offers an enviable 8 comfortable recline positions for your little one, from sitting to sleeping.

Car Seat Cover: The Axiss' seat cover can be removed for washing. It is advisable to buy an extra cover when purchasing the car seat so that you can continue to use it even when the cover is being washed and dried.

Accessories: Accessories available (sold separately) for the Maxi-Cosi Axiss include summer cover, play tray, and pocket (holder for drinks and bottles).

Installing the Maxi-Cosi Axiss

The Maxi-Cosi Axiss may only be installed using a standard 3-point adult car seat belt. Correct fitting of the car seat belt is essential for the safety of your child. The seat belt must be attached in the correct sequence along the red belt routing marks on the Maxi-Cosi Axiss.

The Maxi-Cosi Axiss should preferably be installed on a rear seat. If this is not possible, it can be installed on the passenger seat providing this does not contravene local laws in the country where the car seat is used. When installing the car seat behind the passenger seat, position the passenger seat backrest upright and as far forward as possible so that the child cannot knock it.

The direction of rotation of the Maxi-Cosi Axiss should always be adjusted to the direction of the nearest car door. The button for adjusting the direction of rotation is located on the underside of the Maxi-Cosi Axiss.

Ensure the shoulder belts are never twisted or damaged
Secure the car seat harness--ensure you hear an audible 'click'
The colour indicator shows that the Maxi-Cosi Axiss is locked for driving
Leave no more than 1 finger/1 cm gap between harness and child

Maxi-Cosi Axiss and Your Baby--Safety Guidelines

Installation in a Car: The Maxi-Cosi Axiss is intended for car use only. The Maxi-Cosi Axiss must always be placed in a forward-facing position in the car. Lock fold-down rear seats before installing the Maxi-Cosi Axiss.

Airbags: Deactivate the airbag if using the Maxi-Cosi Axiss on the front passenger seat.

Use of Harness: Always secure your baby with the harness belt, even when he/she is not in the car. Ensure you clearly hear an audible 'click' when securing the harness. The belt system should be adjusted according to the height of the child. Make sure you can fit no more than one finger (1cm) between the harness belts and your baby. Ensure the shoulder belts are never twisted or damaged and are straight from the shell and across your baby's shoulders.

Headrest: Check to make sure the headrest of the Maxi-Cosi Axiss is adjusted to the proper height.

Sun Exposure: Always cover the car seat when exposed to direct sunlight in the car to avoid the cover, metal and plastic parts from becoming too hot for your child's skin.

Next Stage Car Seats

Wait to switch your child to a next stage car seat when your child has reached the maximum weight limit or if the top of your child's head protrudes above the top edge of the seat. Recommended next-stage car seats include...
  • Group 2/3: Maxi-Cosi Rodi AirProtect, Maxi-Cosi Rodi XP, Maxi-Cosi Rodi SPS, Maxi-Cosi Fero and Maxi-Cosi FeroFix

Great for anyone who has a toddler who doesn't always want to cooperate. Tantrums are (almost) a doddle as you can do the seat up much easier with them facing you, whilst you wrestle with their arching back.

Also, great for people with bad backs - I don't know how I'd manage if I had to deal with lifting toddler in sideways.

One negative thing - it's quite stiff to tighten the straps.

On a safety point - our toddler was in ours when our car was involved in a write off accident. Not a scratch on her. Seat did job of keeping her safe very well. (NB seat was reclined at the time - don't know if it made any difference) We ordered a replacement without question.

    Disappointing 25 Oct 2011
    By JJ
Had I reviewed this seat after the first week or so of use, I'd have given it a rave review of 4 stars. One star off for the difficulty of fitting the seat correctly.
The Axiss is very easy to adjust as the child grows (or if swapping another child in the seat occasionally), it also is perfect for swinging around and not straining your back to put the child in. HOWEVER we have found that over time, no matter how firm and secure the seat is fixed into position, over time with the pressure of pulling the straps tight on the child each time they get into the seat, you gradually loosen the fixing of the car seat in the car. I believe this is a design fault. If I were to tighten the straps on the child after swinging it around to front position, this is not an issue because the forward/back security of the seat is rigid. But that is not the point, I need to straighten the straps before I swing it around to face forwards, to do otherwise is very uncomfortable, and almost impossible unless you can climb in front of it. I hope I have explained that well.
If you don't see that as a problem (i.e. you are happy to continue to readjust the car seats fixing almost every time you put little one in the car) then please also bear in mind that because of the swing ability, the car seat does stick out further than the other maxi cosi seats, so if you have a small car, or if your child is particularly large / behind a large passenger then the leg room for the child is not ideal. Bear in mind also to test the car seat at say Mothercare or Halfords to see if your car's seat is actually big enough for the car seat - the Maxi Cosi fitting guide is not completely reliable for this. For example we have a Peugeot 407 estate and although the seat fits in well with space on the seat itself, my husband is tall and has his seat a fair way back when driving, when my son is on furthest tilt his feet already kick the back of the seat and he is only 9 months old (he is a large 9 months though), but I worry that in the next year he will be far to cramped (even when I am driving).
Hope that is helpful, any questions please let me know.
