Does the job 30 July 2010
By N. Cook
Like the previous reviewer I bought this to recover data from a disk in a defunct computer.

I had no trouble connecting the drive in the enclosure, despite not being all that technical. I had more of a problem getting the disk out of the old computer!!

I had intended copying data from the disk onto the new computer, but now just use it as another external drive.

I can play music from it without any delay, so a good buy!!

A previous reviewer objected to the star-shaped lights. Yes, they look a bit tacky, but they're no reason to avoid this product. Actually, they look like the blue stars I clicked on to rate this item!

I found fitting the hard drive in the enclosure a bit fiddly, although my husband says he wishes everything could be assembled as easily as this was. My only other objection was that it required a good hard push to get the mains power lead securely plugged in to the transformer.

Other than that, the drive worked as soon as I connected it to my PC (Windows XP). It also works with my laptop (Windows 7), so it's a great way of doing back-ups or storing files for use on computers that can't talk to each other (no Homegroups on XP). If you have an old/spare hard drive, buying this enclosure is cheaper than buying an external hard drive, and just as good.

I have several enclosures now and this is the best of the fan-less ones I have bought. It is let down badly by five star shaped lights on the front which light up when it is switched on. I would recommend some black electrical tape to cover them up leaving just a very small window through it. The build quality is very good, it fits nicely and has all the screws supplied for fitting the drive in it's tracks. It will get hot for long term use, even when used vertical in it's supplied stand, but for backing up pictures or files you don't access often it is good and allows you to re use your old internal hard drives. It is worth the money and I give it 4 stars due to the horrendous lights.

Saved my 120 gig hard drive from the scrap heap
I was going to throw my old 120 gig hard drive away as I now use only a lap top. This great piece of kit now sits on my desktop and I back up my documents to it.

Poor instructions
I never got beyond the stage of red lights. I'm not sure if this is because the inserted HD is defective or if there is something wrong with the connections. Read more
