I have tried several flavours of wireless (currently on "g" MIMO) and always have problems with data transfer rates and occasional drop outs. Regardless of what manufacturers tell you, in a house in an urban environment where there is a lot of other electro-magnetic interference wireless simply does not perform well. I was very frustrated by this and didn't want the expense of running Cat 5 cable throughout the house. Then I spotted these plugs. I must admit that I was initially sceptical but at under £50 a pair I decided to try them. Never has an installation been so simple. I ran a cable (it comes with 2 cables) from my router into the plug and then ran another cable from the other plug to my computer. The router is upstairs and the computer is downstairs and it worked first time...simple!!! The application that comes with it tells you what speed you're actually getting. Mine runs at 65Mbps on average but that is with both plugs plugged into plug boards which is something the manufacturers don't recommend for reasons of interference. It feels a lot faster than my 54Mbps MIMO wireless connection and is totally stable and lightening fast to connect on start up. These do exactly what they should with the minimum of fuss. You won't be disappointed.

These plugs have been a revelation/revolution for me.

Like many others here, I have struggled to get a decent signal from the wireless network in my house (it's built of brieze blocks, including all internal walls). Even my (very expensive) 'N' router is a waste of time.

I have a computer upstairs, at the other end of the house on which all files, documents, photos, music, video are stored. Communication with this has always been a struggle with wireless but I plugged these in - one to that machine and one to the router downstairs and OMG EVERYTHING IS PERFECT!!

The utility you get with the plugs shows I'm getting 85Mbps throughput AND I HAVE EXTENSION CABLES PLUGGED INTO EXTENSION CABLES. I really can't believe this, having read other peoples problems, but it is what I'm getting.

I now have video streaming to my TV and music going to my music server AT THE SAME TIME without glitches. File transfer is great; I transferred my entire MP3 collection (20GB)between machines completely reliably in minutes - well, quite a few minutes but minutes, nevertheless.

So why only three stars?

Well, these things are BIG and UGLY and produce a lot of heat - I don't feel comfortable leaving them plugged in, so it's an extra job when I leave the house. I wish they would go into a low power sleep mode when the network was not in use.

I'm also a bit concerned about the potential reliability issues identified by others and I will update this review if I have any problems.

But in basic performance terms, I have found these beyond criticism

UPDATE 09/05/2011: Still going strong - so no reliability issues!

I bought this recently and its really made my network easier - simply plugged the homeplugs into the mains and it worked.

Although it doesnt mention it in the product description this pack comes with 2 ethernet cables, so you dont even need to buy those. There was some software with it as well but it worked without so I didnt use it.

I was a little apprehensive about buying this set as I hadnt heard of the brand and they look fairly generic; but they have worked perfectly so far. Overall an excellent way of extending a network if you dont want to/cant use wireless.

The homeplugs arrived today and installation was as simple as all the reviews state. I bought them to allow connection between my router in one room, with the Humax HDR satellite receiver in the lounge. BBC have just implemented a beta trial of IPlayer that can be received by the Humax box via the Internet, and then shown on the TV just like a satellite broadcast.
For the Beta trial, you just have to press the red button for interactive viewing, then type in a "secret" code (you can find this by searching for BBC iplayer on freesat). If the beta trial is successful, there will be no need to enter a code.
I haven't watched for long, but Tuesdays Eastenders ran perfectly on high quality and looked like standard TV.
Fantastic - the homeplug installation and BBC iplayer were as it should be - Plug and Play with no troubleshooting!
Bear in mind that your Broadband speed has to be at least 1MBps for normal quality and at least 2MBps for high quality. I haven't used the homeplug software utility to check the throughbut, but the 85Mbps (roughly 8MBps)shouldn't be a limiting factor, though I haven't watched IPlayer yet for any length of time.

I upgraded (that's a joke) to Vista a while ago, and then recently moved house. Unfortunately my PC is in the top floor bedroom, and the router is down in the lounge. I dug out my trusty old Linksys USB wireless adaptor, only to find that Linksys don't make Vista drivers for it. The generic Vista ones work, but I was getting a maximum connection speed of 700kbps which was rubbish.

A friend told me about Homeplug, so I did a little routing on Amazon, and uncovered these babies.

For £45 I thought why not, and ordered just a few days ago. I've always preferred physical connections over wireless, so they seemed ideal. Delivery was super swift and I received them this morning.

First impressions are fantastic! I plugged one of the supplied cat5 cables into my router, other end into a homeplug. Then upstairs again one of the supplied car5 cables into my PC, and the other into another homeplug. It didn't work at first, but a re-start of my PC fixed that.

It's currently performing excellently. I'm back to getting a 14mbps connection speed, and haven't experienced any connection drop offs at all. I'd highly recommend to anyone!
