Only 3 stars although product does work fine & I have bought 2 of these now. Product comes with mains lead & a fitted rather than moulded mains plug for the U.K. (Not sure this is legal in the U.K anymore) I decided to check the mains plug wiring & glad I did, the blue neutral wire was stripped of its insulation & strands of copper wire were poking out. (Photos available) I rewired the plug to make it safe. The 2nd one I received was fine in this respect. I discovered that depending on which way round you connect the LED cable from the front panel decides if you get a permanent static light, or flickering during hard drive activity. Another small point but may irritate some folk who buy multiple units is that both devices I received have the on/off rocker switch operating the opposite way round to each other. These are pcb mounted components so can't be just turned round, I guess they used a different switch during production. I may buy another one of these as they are cheap enough but would advise anyone to check the mains plug wiring if they receive a mains lead with a fitted plug.

I purchased several of these to turn some old (redundant) internal IDE drives into external USB ones.

Construction of the units is good and very easy to fit the drive into? They are also come supplied with screws needed to hold your supplied drive into place. And a stand to hold the unit vertically if you prefer that to having them horizontal. One nice touch is that they have four feet on the bottom and four little dimples on the top casing to match the feet? This means if you have multiple units, they can be stacked on top of each really nicely. E.g. the feet on the bottom of one unit sit in the dimples on the top the one below etc.

There doesn't seam to be any issues with speed when reading the drives either. And mine have been quite heavily encrypted (don't think that would make much difference to the USB side). The drives just work as well as they used to when they were internally fitted.

For the price they are a nice way to utilize any old drives you might have lying around.

Bought two of these to make use of a couple of old IDE hard drives I had. Initial impression: the frustration free packaging is just an empty box with the enclosure, power supply, mains cable, usb lead and instruction book loose inside. Seems odd although nothing was damaged apart from one rubber foot detached from the base and stuck to the inside of the box. Installation was simple, remove two screws on the end of the unit, slide the drive holder out, connect the IDE connector and power supply connector, secure the drive with 4 screws (supplied), slide the drive holder back in and secure the end panel with the two screws. Connect the power and USB cables and your PC should recognise the drive and install the drivers. That's it! Construction quality is adequate, one unit had a slightly wonky switch but that's how it was soldered to the board and worked fine. The unit is made from aluminium with plastic ends. There are no ventilation slots which made me think they might overheat but they seem ok so far. Perhaps the aluminium body acts as a heat sink. I haven't used them to transfer any quantity of data yet so that will be the test. For the money though you can't go wrong and I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who has any old drives that could be used for a bit of extra storage or hooked up to your TV if it has a PVR facility. Finally, if you have a SATA drive this can also be used with this unit and the connection cable is supplied.

So far so good. Easy to setup, everything up and running shortly after the item was delivered. Ideal solution if you have a spare HDD and want to create cheap local backup storage. Will probably be buying more.

Good piece of kit, relatively easy to install the drive into the enlosure. Be careful when squeezing the wires into the end of the enclosure.
One installed and connected to the old SATA drive my new computer would not recognise some of the files (old SATA was XP new computer was Win 7).

Worth looking at the link below which helped tremendously to access the old files.

I bought two of these when my desktop PC died. I converted the PC's internal drives into external ones. Data intact!

Easy to install and simple use. Only four stars because the build is a little less than perfect but, for the money, I can't really complain.

Does exactly what it says. An excellent and inexpensive way to make use of a hard drive from an old computer. So easy to set up and get going. I now have an extra back up of all my photos, music and documents.

Old Dell Dimension 2400 power supply gave up the ghost. Not worth fixing since it's only a backup unit, so ordered this to extract one of the 2 hard drives. 10 minutes to extract the HD from the 2400, 10 minutes to install HD in the enclosure. Connect everything up, switch on, new driver software installed and the system sees the 2 partitions on the old HD as 2 extra drives. Dead easy.
Next switch off, reboot from USB drive to old operating system. Tries to do it, but no joy , even in Safe Mode(of course not, all the drivers on the old HD are for the old PC not the new Dell Inspiron 570 - wishful thinking!).
Does what it was bought for and very easily.
