Surprisingly good!, 1 Feb 2009
'Max Payne' is based on the video game of the same name and stars Mark Wahlberg as the troubled cop, Max. After his wife and new born daughter are murdered, NYPD detective Max Payne dedicates his life to finding her killers, which leads to a pharmacuetical company that has been making a drug for soldiers which makes them feel no fear, bt also gives them powerful hallucinations.
To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this film - perhaps an hour and a half of brainless action like other videogame movies such as the Resident Evils and Doom, but this one actually had quite a good plot and felt more like an action thriller than a full-on weaponfest. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of gun battles and explosions but it did feel like the writers had used their imagination a little bit and the end result is a pretty well made, dark, violent and gritty movie that came well above my expectations.
Overall, even if you're not a fan of the game (like myself, who has never played it), it is a very watchable and entertaining film that will be better than you think. I definitely recommend giving this a watch.

Max boredom, 27 April 2009
The Max Payne video games are renowned for two things, the first would be the way the stories are brilliantly scripted and secondly the solid action they provide for gamers. Does the movie achieve these two things? The answer is sadly, no.
The story, Max Payne comes home to find his wife and new born child both murdered. From there on it's upto Max to find the killer in New York City.
Ok i didnt expect an exact video game to movie transition but the biggest problem was the star of Max Payne, Mark Wahlberg. As a man on a path of vengence, he displays very little emotion and the dialogue is delivered in such a subtle way that I began to think does the guy really care about what he's doing? As angry as Max Payne should be, he doesn't have any charm or wit about him as in the games because he is undercover and trying to be 'less of a cop' to get closer to the killer. It's all just taken too seriously at times.
Many other characters were being thrown into the story, there is so much irrevelant narrative and begins to sway away from the main story at times. It just never seems to flow as one scene will cut to the next and the lack of dialogue just has you lost. The antogonist is just laughable, you just see the twist coming from a mile away.
Now, the big big downfall of this movie is the lack of action, when it happens it is extremely short lived and we are thrust back into more pointless story progression. The action isn't stylised or there is nothing creative about the way Max can take out his enemies, the 'bullet time' effect is terrible and so tedious that you can get the kettle on before it's over. When the action is boring for a movie which should have an emphasis on action then you just know it has problems.
The only redeeming feature of the movie is the excellent Blu Ray picture quality, the film noir/dark effect that hangs over the city just looks fantastic in HD. From dark and gloomy alley ways to the skyscraper views of Manhattan island silhouetted against the night sky as snow slowly falls and settles. Visually, the film looks incredible and it really is a shame that the action, characters and plot didn't come together to really give a kick to the overall experience.
Rent it and make up your mind.
Ciao.
