Amazon.co.uk Review
The joined-at-the-hip team of director Richard Donner and star Mel Gibson (all the Lethal Weapon movies and Conspiracy Theory) had obvious fun resurrecting the Wild Western comedy television series about a roguish rambler-gambler. In Maverick, Gibson assumes the role of cardsharp Bret Maverick, equally quick with a pair of aces and a pair of guns. Good sport James Garner (who played Maverick on TV) takes another role, as a lawman who travels alongside the hero to a big-money poker game on a riverboat. The real peach in this fruit salad of satire and broad jokes, however, is Jodie Foster, who plays a crafty Southern belle quite adept at poker herself. Sexy, funny, and (from the onscreen evidence) a great kisser, Foster has never been more of a delight. Written by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). --Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars When Mel Was Good To Watch, 28 Mar 2009
By G. R. Donaldson (Great Britain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Maverick is a gentle reminder of how good Mel Gibson is in light comedic roles. There are a few laugh out loud moments but mostly this film makes you smile. With camoes a plenty and a ravishing looking Jodie Foster this film is over before you know it. The sunny western settings look delightfully fake and everyone gives it there all. Danny Glover pops up as a bank robber and Alfred Molina is great as the hissable villain. I just enjoyed familiar face spotting especially during the climactic card game. Its a shame Mr Gibson went on to making historically inaccurate epics and getting himself arrested. He is a pleasure to watch in this as is James Garner. The DVD itself is a bit bare but the quality of the film makes up for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most twisted movie of all times!, 24 Jul 2005
Well, it is!
What I mean is that it's probably the movie containing the most twists ever to be made!
Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and everyone else in the movie is acting like they were telling the story of their lives, and it's all done with such class!

The movie is about this poker-player, Maverick (who is quite fast with the gun, yet a horrible shooter), who wants so badly to get into a poker tournament.
But the price just to get in is too much for Maverick to pay, so he sets on this journey to get enough money for the contest, which he does by getting back money from people who owe him.
Sounds quite boring, huh? Well that's what I thought too, before I saw it (check the stars for my opinion now).
Because on the way, Maverick will be fooled and lied to, in the most funny ways, and he'll deliver just about the same amount of lies back.
This leads to quite a lot of twists, small ones aswell as big ones.
And it's all made so 'darn' funny!

I remember this one moment of the movie (don't worry, no twist-revealers here) where Maverick is in this bank to get some cash from this guy who owes him quite a lot.
The banker says that he doesn't have anything.
All of the sudden, this masked black guy runs into the bank with a gun and tells them that it's a stick-up.
As all this is happening, the black guy loses his mask, revealing the face of Danny Glover!
And even better, both Maverick and the robber looks at each other, and you can see by the way they react that they both think "haven't we met before"?
And of course they have! In Lethal Weapon! (both of these movies are directed by Richard Donner, so this is kind of a treat for the Lethal Weapon fans).
Anyway, so when the robber tells the banker to give him all his money, he gives him this big bunk, which he had already told Maverick that he didn't have!
That's just one of the millions of tricks and lies they play on each other during the movie. Just about EVERYONE who has a line in this movie, is lying about something to someone!

And without revealing too much more, I'll just say that you will have LOTS of more treats and twists to look forward to when you watch the movie.
I don't think that five minutes passes by without anyone lying to someone or a twist being revealed.

I so enormously recommend you to watch this movie. Whether you are a comedy-fan, action-fan, western-fan or just a film-lover doesn't matter. You'll love it no matter what!

Buy it, watch it.... and watch it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best films money can buy!, 4 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Maverick [VHS] [1994] (VHS Tape)
I have to say that this is one of the best films in the entire history of movies. Classic comedy, great scenes and brilliant acting make this a joy to watch. The plot is engaging and the whole toungue-in-cheekness of it are hilariously funny. This was unfortunatly highly underated by critics and never really made it, but dont listen to what they say. If you like westerns, comedy or not, this is one of the best money can buy. If you dont like westerns, this is still one of the best films money can buy! Watch it, and enjoy.
