Format: DVD
Maverick is directed by Richard Donner and written by William Goldman. It stars Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner, with support coming from Alfred Molina, Graham Greene and James Coburn. The music is scored by Randy Newman and Vilmos Zsigmond is on photography. It's based on the 1950s television series of the same name and the plot finds Gibson as Maverick and follows his attempt to take his place in a major five-card draw poker tournament. With Foster and Garner in tow, there's plenty of adventures and misadventures along the way.

After Costner's Dances With Wolves and Eastwood's Unforgiven had reignited interest in the Western genre in the 90s, Richard Donner and his team felt the time was right to unleash a light hearted Western on the mainstream audience. Timming was important, as was the casting, but Maverick is the sort of family friendly fun that could in truth be released at any time in any decade and still be a hit at the box office. It's not particularly clever in narrative or themes, but with its blending of action, romance and comedy seamlessly coming together as a whole, Maverick is practically hard to dislike. Even the cast seem to be having a real good time, with Gibson smooth and roguish, Foster dainty yet spunky and Garner (the original Maverick from the TV show) offering up a sort of stoic maturity over proceedings. With all three playing the comedy with ease (how great it is to see Foster in such a role). Donner and Goldman have also shown respect to both the TV show and the Western in general (check out those lovely landscapes), while it's always fun to play spot the numerous stars in cameos.

Harmless fluff, then, but always watchable and never once over reaching itself by trying to be something its not. 8/10

When I was about 10 Maverick was my favourite of all the western TV series, and there were many. So, when I saw this I thought it would be fun to see it again and see if it still appealed. It is every bit as good as I remembered it. Forget that awful film version with Mel Gibson, it's not a patch on the TV series with James Garner at his laconic best. For those who have not seen it, think "Hustle", but in the wild west.Garner and Jack Kelly play gambling brothers, who are always scheming to make a fast buck. The stories might seem a little thin by today's standard, but they are played out with great charm and wit. I particularly liked the episode "Gun Shy" which was a spoof of another popular TV western of the time "Gun Smoke", and this was decades before Mel Brooks or "Airplane" stormed the cinema. Here's hoping they bring out further episodes on DVD. Roger Moore was in this series for a while as a gambling cousin and it would be nice to see an epsiode featuring him.

The transfer to Blu-ray isn't the best out there, but I just had to have this movie on Blu-ray, one of my favorite comedy/westerns ever made.

Maverick is a good film inspired by the television series of the same name. The performances from the principal cast are good even if they are just in the most part playing it for laughs. Overall, a good film but don't expect too much from it.

Maverick is a gentle reminder of how good Mel Gibson is in light comedic roles. There are a few laugh out loud moments but mostly this film makes you smile. With camoes a plenty and a ravishing looking Jodie Foster this film is over before you know it. The sunny western settings look delightfully fake and everyone gives it there all. Danny Glover pops up as a bank robber and Alfred Molina is great as the hissable villain. I just enjoyed familiar face spotting especially during the climactic card game. Its a shame Mr Gibson went on to making historically inaccurate epics and getting himself arrested. He is a pleasure to watch in this as is James Garner. The DVD itself is a bit bare but the quality of the film makes up for it.

What do you get if you put James Garner, one of the best deliverers of humour in Hollywood's history, Mel Gibson who shows an aptitude for comedy which may have served him better than some of his more violent movies, and Jodie Foster who shows the breadth of her acting ability from Silence of the Lambs to this movie?
Answer...Maverick. If you're miserable, watch it, if you're not...still watch it. Wonderful.
