In his gripping narrative, Russell seamlessly moves from the days when Maud was courted by society to the end when her friends, apart from former PM's wife, Margot Asquith, shunned her in case they, too, were labeled as sexual deviants. The trial was based on the existence of the notorious (and fictional?). German black book and its list of 47,000 sexually depraved people who could be used by the Germans to defeat the British in War. Names included Herbert and Margot Asquith and the judge himself. Maud did not stand a chance.
A fantastic read brought out in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics which will be looking ahead to the next London Olympics, in four years' time.

This is a superb book, fantastically written with an amazing true story. Maud Allan was a bit of a saucy minx whose erotic dance wooed the nation and she was a huge celebrity - Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Anjelina Jolie and Jordan, rolled into one. But, from saving the 1908 London Olympics, her career faltered when she was involved in one of the most scandalous trials of all time when she was accused of being a lesbian - the first time the term had been used so freely in public. The trial knocked the First World War off the front pages and the excitement is beautifully captured by Russell James who's used original trial scripts - simply, because no one could make it up. Poor Maud, you'll love her!
