First this is a superb recording of the St Matthew Passion and the choir is excellent.

BUT there is an implication by the packaging that this is a new recording brought out for the 800th anniversary ....IT ID NOT!! It is an old recording revamped ... Possibly digitally enhanced because the recording is good but the trebles and altos are female sopranos and contraltos who produce a very different sound. Personally I like Nicholas Harnoncourt's recording of the St John Passion on DVD the boy alto is superb. Likewise he uses boys voices on his complete set of the Cantatas ... Which I highly recommend.

For me the majority of Church music requires the purity of a boy's voice ... There are some exceptions like the very theatrical and operatic masses by Haydn and of course the Verdi Requiem ... Boys would not be appropriate there.

But imagine Westminster Cathedral using female soloists for works such as the Victoria Requiem ... It would be ruined!

This version of the Marthew Passion goes out of its way to state that the soloists on its other 10 recordings made for the anniversary are all boys from the choir ... So obviously they realise that they make the most appropriate sound.

On a final note just imagine Cicilia Bartholi one of my favourites singing The first verse of Once in Royal David's City!!! ..I rest my case!

This work is brilliant and performed extremely well by this choir. Parts of the work will make you cry, they are so sublime.
