Product Description

Product Description

The music of Billy Joel is a staple of American popular culture but, due to major political unrest, it was not until the late 1980s that his songs were heard in Russia. Billy Joel made the historic decision to be one of the first major artists to perform there in 1987. This remarkable event, which holds deep personal significance for Billy, is fully documented in ‘A Matter Of Trust: The Bridge To Russia’ Deluxe Edition 2CD & DVD. It features the live show in its entirety with 11 previously unreleased tracks across 2CDs. The DVD includes concert footage, restored from the original 35 milimeter negative, with an additional 12 performances, previously unseen. Also featured is a documentary directed by Jim Brown, which chronicles Billy’s 1987 Soviet tour, plus booklet containing rare photos and first-hand accounts from key journalists

5.0 out of 5 stars At last! 29 May 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
"A Matter Of Trust: The Bridge To Russia" is a really long-overdue full release of a previously heavily abridged 1987 live album, "Kontsert" (often referred to as "Kohuept", which is the English attempt at replicating the Russian title) and comes in various formats, including music only, or music plus the visual concert on either DVD or Bluray. There was always something a bit disappointing about the original, if I'm completely honest. The audio quality was slightly weak, some of the harmonies on the tracks they chose were a bit wobbly and, given Billy's reputation for long gigs, this abridged version was more that a touch unsatisfying. All of this has been rectified on "A Matter Of Trust" as the sound quality has been enhanced and the missing songs restored on a bumper double album, with the addition of a few bonus rehearsal tracks, a cracking version of The Beatles' "She Loves You", a solo "Piano Man" and a terrific "New York State Of Mind". There is a beautiful thick booklet with pictures, posters, essays, lyrics and everything you could possibly want to know about Billy's historic Russian concert. When I listened to "Kontsert", it was enjoyable enough; when I listen to "A Matter Of Trust: The Bridge To Russia", it is exciting, edgy and thrilling - I wish I could have been there. Of course, the occasional wobbly harmonies in "Uptown Girl", the questionable second lead vocal in "An Innocent Man" plus the slightly raw lead vocals on "Honesty" are still present and correct, this isn't a revisionist package, thankfully, but given the longer concert and the greater context of these wobbles, the odd slip here and there adds to the authenticity of the live performance. 5.0 out of 5 stars A masterclass in how to give a concert! 25 Jun 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I remember watching the concert when it was originally broadcast - I recorded it and took the soundtrack off onto an audio cassette tape (remember them?!) and I know this concert inside out and back to front because of that over the last 27 years! Then the concert was repeated on BBC4 recently, alongside the documentary 'The Road to Lenningrad' which tells the behind-the-scenes story of how the concert came about and the impact it had on the USSR at that time - and, it has to be said in no small part as well, the impact it had on Billy himself. He, Christie Brinkley and several of the band members from that 1987 concert came together about 2 years ago to give interviews with their memories of that tour - it's quite an emotional rollercoaster to watch.

On this set you get the DVD (which has the concert and the documentary on it) and two CDs of songs from the concert, plus extras which you only get on this set. There is also an additional free download MP3 version of the songs so you can stick them straight onto the music player of your choice. You also get a sizeable booklet with more memories, photos, and all the words to all the songs. I'd say it's a pretty good package for the money!

Billy Joel is the consummate showman - his stage-craft is second to none. The way in which he draws in a Russian audience who had no idea how to behave at a rock concert is amazing - but he had to fight to achieve it, throwing the famous piano-tipping 'tantrum' in order to get them to turn the house lights down because turning them up just made the audience freeze. There was also the issue of too many tickets being given away to politicians and senior government figures, who sat in the front rows in stony silence...

The essential part of this package for any BJ fan is the remarkable DVD which is split into two parts. There is a 85 minute concert performance which is high quality production and shows Billy and the band put together a high octane and energetic repertoire of most of the best known hits. There is also a 75 minute documentary about the planning for the tour which is fascinating with comments from those involved made during the tour and reflections from the band twenty five years on. A real insight into what the USSR was like culturally in the final years of the Cold War. The 2 cd's are an expanded version of the Kohuept album increasing the number of tracks from 16 to 27 and showcase some of the best live performances of his career. Make sure you get the deluxe set including the DVD. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mullet of Trust 24 May 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Superb documentary and bluray transfer of Joel's historic concerts in 1987. Also we finally get a full blown 2 CDs of audio to replace the edited down Kohuept album. The whole thing gave me a big smile. Especially Billy's equipment smashing tantrum with his lighting engineer & the mullets of the backing band. Thanks Billy.
