Yunque's patent generosity of spirit informs this great sweep of a book - a coruscating riff, a literary extemporisation of lives interwoven in many changing, shifting keys - like the jazz-music that informs it and drifts across its pages. Edgardo Vega Yunque joins the likes of Charles Dickens, and John Steinbeck in the van of writers whose work would be nothing without the signature of the magnanimous man at work. Irish Puerto-Rican Jewish Polish Italian - the awesome diversity of life that is New York - that is the USA - comes to vivid life as a young woman goes in search of her father - who, before she can find him, must rediscover himself again after mind and soul-shattering events. Vidamia Farrell is a modern day Holden Caulfield as she relates the events of her burgeoning life - of the sheer stubborness of optimism: she refuses to crumple as her father had. There are very few writers as can touch this level, this depth of humanity. We only have to opine that Mr Yunque took so long to let us have his delight.
