Blokus is the strategy game for the whole family. Players take turns placing pieces on their board, each starting from their corner. Each new piece must touch at least one other piece of the same color, but only at the corners. The goal is to get rid of all your pieces. The game ends when all players are blocked from laying down any more of their pieces--the player with least number of squares wins. Blokus is a game for up to 4 players.

Blokus is a board game that is superficially related to Tetris. You have a square board and the idea is that you place coloured shapes onto the board, your pieces can only touch on their corners, and as the 4 players each place their pieces on the board you start having to think about how you can get your pieces to fit in the gaps left by their pieces. Each game takes about 20 minutes to play and my kids (10 and 7) enjoy playing it with their mum and dad.
On the surface it's a simple place the pieces game, but given that there are 3 other people playing it can become quite tactical. I've played it with most of the people I know and it kept several people (ages 10 to 80) occupied on a new years day. You can even play some single player game variations on the game.
The biggest problem is that you need 4 people to play a game, but it does make an excellent family game.
Just a very late addition to my review - you can indeed play with 2 or 3 players quite happily. Playing with three generates a very strange set of strategy as each of the three players takes turns playing the remaining colour on its go (it works really well), but I do find the two player version, where each player plays two colours, the least satisfying. After several months it still gets a regular dust off as it's just good fun.

Our Family love this game, so much so we've bought some of the other variants of it. With Adults it's high strategy, but even my 4 year old can play.
The idea is to place all 21 of your pieces on the board, a little easier said than done as you get blocked along the way as pieces can only touch corner to corner.
We have had this game for a few years and it's a definite favourite. It takes about 20 minutes to play (could be a lot longer if you have serious highly competitive chess style players, who think about every move for an hour!! Fortunately none of those in our house)
Although best suited to 4 players, it has az two player version, where you each play with two colours.

Bonjour! This looks to be a good game, but I think it will put my son's language skills to the test as the game instructions, tactics and all the wording and game descriptions on the outside of the box are in French, German and another language (that I don't recognise!). Very disappointing that Amazon's website description does not mention this! Please be aware of this before you order! If needed, English instructions are available on the Blokus Website...
