Product Description

In still photography and video, the matte box is a device used on the end of a lens to block the sun or other light source in order to prevent glare and lens flare. It performs essentially the same function as a lens hood and also mounts in front of the lens, it includes adjustable fins or flank flags.
Another purpose of the matte box is to hold glass or plastic filters in place in front of the lens. The matte boxes are also made for Camcorder cameras and HD cameras for the same reasons as for film cameras. This matte box is supported by two rods that run the length of the camera.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sizing issues 16 April 2012
To my disappointment, I soon found that if you have a lens with a 77m thread (mine is the canon EFS 17 - 55 F2.8 IS USM), the end element of that lens will not go through the matte box when you zoom. If this is normal then fair enough but I imagined it to be like a large lens hood and you would be able to zoom through it without contact or even seeing the matte box. This wont be a problem to all but its something to carefully consider before purchase. Will your lens fit through?

Upon first hands on inspection, you see that the sides and top panels are made of strong plastic. The only metal part of this product is the 15mm rail fitting - good to know that that part will be reliably strong! This isnt a huge concern as the plastic seems fairly tough and durable though. The hinge clips to attach each panel to the the matte box are strong - I had to really push hard to clip them into place. Not a chance they will feel loose and wont come off without a bit of elbow grease!

This review only gets a 3 as the product description wasn't clear about lens compatibility. Overall it seems to be a strong, reliable, well made and affordable product. I would recommend it to all but just be sure to check your lens diameter before purchasing! 77mm lenses are too big for it. Anything else will be fine.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad hinge design 13 Nov 2013

At first sight this appears good value for money.
however the snap on hinges that hold the barn doors on to the matte box are useless.
They break off when pushing onto the matte box .the plastic the hinges are made from is too rigid and breaks immediatly

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfied customer 30 Aug 2012

Bought as a gift for a camera man. Was delivered quickly and well packaged. He was very pleased with the item. I didn't realise he also needs to buy rods in order to make use of it as they are not included, so it would be good to get those as a bundle, or - as he did- make your own much cheaper than I've seen online by getting a length of rod from a DIY store and cutting it down to size. All in all, he's very pleased with it so I am a satisfied customer!

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk 2 Feb 2014

I have a matte box for one of my cameras and was needing an extra one, so I bought this. It broke the very minute I started assembling it - and I've been in business for many years now, so I'm not a novice in dealing with equipment. Sent it back the same day, and Amazon was great in refunding it promptly.

This is absolutely worthless cheap plastic matte box. Buy something else made of aluminum, that will last, with bayonet joining flags, not this plastic joining rubbish. You can find reasonably priced alloy/aluminum matte boxes for £70-100. Keep searching.

Purchased and in fitting together the clips broke off.... DSet it up to return but gave them a second chance so ordered another one as it was required for a shoot... The second one did the same. There is no was to attach the doors without the fastenings breaking... CHEAP RUBBISH

1.0 out of 5 stars Hinges that attach Panels will break 10 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase
Looks good value but the hinges that attach the side and upper panels are made from rigid plastic. As soon as you push them on, the hinges snap off. If you can by any means get them to fit right, I'm sure this product would do the job, but in my experience all of the panel hinges snapped when trying to be cautiously fitted.

Black tape has been used in an effort to rectify this but even for £20, this item isn't really worth it. Spend some more on a better one and keep your £20 to put towards that one.

Having said that, item arrived early and boxed in good condition from the seller. Item is just dyer due to the hinge problem.

On the first try to attach the shade panels, the connecting parts just broke (made of bad plastic, I assume). All of them. Thank you for nothing!
