Book Description

23 Sep 2011
A singer once said his pitch was right on the nose: his word enunciation letter perfect: his understanding of a song thorough. He will be missed very much, not only by myself, but by his fans all over the world . The singer was the legendary Frank Sinatra, The man he spoke about: the irreplaceable Matt Monro. The Singer's Singer: The Life and Music of Matt Monro, is the highly-anticipated story of one of Britain's most iconic singers, tracing Matt Monro's life from his poverty stricken upbringing in post-war Britain to his day job as London bus driver to the steady rise to fame that saw the singer battling the highs and lows of the entertainment industry to become one of Britain's best-loved entertainers. This is the man behind the image, the man who rubbed shoulders with some of the most famous names in the business, who recorded the very first James Bond theme song ( From Russia with Love ), represented his country in the Eurovision Song Contest and recorded the international hits Softly as I Leave You, Born Free, Walk Away and Portrait of My Love . In an intimate portrait written by the singer's daughter, Michele Monro, and drawing on more than two hundred interviews from the most important characters in Matt's life, The Singer's Singer exposes the man behind the voice, telling the story of how Terry Parsons overcame poverty to arrive at the very heart of the post-war British entertainment industry as the unforgettable Matt Monro. Including never-before-seen photography, exclusive correspondence between Matt and some of the biggest names in the music business and a rich array of personal anecdotes, this is the first comprehensive look at the life of the man his peers dubbed the Singer's Singer , the irreplaceable Matt Monro.

More About the Author

I am the daughter of the late singer Matt Monro and it is only since he passed away that I started writing in earnest although I did write a 90-page intimate portrayal on Matt Monro for EMI some years ago. It actually took me three years to write 'The Singer's Singer', mainly because I wanted to make sure the content was accurate and there was a lot of research to do. What one might not realise is that I have also published a 'special' edition of the book called 'Matt Monro -Special Reserve', which is also available on Amazon, and within that set is a second book which includes the singer's sessionography, discography as well as all the television and radio stations that he appeared on throughout his career.

'I have also been writing the CD notes for EMI for the last ten years and I love the fact that the content is personal to the album rather than just a short biography on the artist. Although I am hungry to start writing another book I have found the year packed full of promotion for this product and as well as radio and press interviews, I have appeared on BBC Breakfast and QVC twice. I have been going around the country doing book signings and presentations and it has been fabulous meeting the fans along the way.

If you do decide to invest in this book I hope you enjoy the journey and learn more about what Matt Monro contributed to the music industry - I can promise you it isn't dull.

5.0 out of 5 stars Special Reserve 14 April 2010
Format:Hardcover
The Singers Singer Special Reserve is a very special edition and an absolute essential for the true and dedicated Matt Monro fan.
In addition to a copy of Michele Monro's absorbing account of her father's life story, this edition includes a hidden gem in the form of an accompanying book that is the definitive record of Matt's 28 year career history that has taken many years of methodical research to put together, and has been produced in painstaking detail by Richard Moore and Michele Monro.
It is beautifully presented on quality glossy paper and contains many previously unreleased black and white photographs.
Both books are very attractively packaged together in a sturdy well produced slip case.
Absolutely anything and everything you need to know on Matt Monro's career path is included in the Special Reserve, from Matt's earliest 78 recordings, his numerous radio and television appearances, right up to his very latest and last recordings. There is also a worldwide discography as well as a list of key studio albums.
The Special Reserve edition is sure to be an essential and valued addition to the library of anyone who is truly interested in the complete life and music history of the late great Matt Monro.
Another bonus along with both books is a 21 track CD of previously unreleased material that will not appear anywhere else.
A real treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Special Reserve 20 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book is an amazing insight into the life of Britain's greatest ever vocalist Matt Monro. Right from the very beginning, from his childhood growing up in the East End of London in the 1930's, his struggle to finally get recognized of the enormous talent he had, his remarkable career and very sadly his tragically early death at the age of just fifty four. This book is a "labour of love" from Matt's daughter Michele and quite frankly what isn't in this book is not worth knowing. The detail that has gone into it is just incredible.
Two extra bonuses with this "Special Reserve" is an extremely rare cd that are not available anywhere else.
Then an extra book, "Beyond The Life and Music of Matt Monro", also by Michele with an enormous input by Richard Moore gives a complete discography, a complete TV and Radio appearance broadcast listing, and a complete listing of every song he recorded, including dates, takes, wonderful photos, just about everything.
Michele, you have done your Dad proud!

5.0 out of 5 stars Matt Monro 30 Oct 2010
By Lori V
Format:Hardcover
Unfortunately I recently learned of Matt Monro's music. I say that because I missed out on listening to his beautiful voice all these years. I heard "My Kind of Girl" on the radio and was hooked. I did some research on the Internet and saw this item and just had to get it! I knew nothing about Matt Monro, and now I feel like a actually knew him! This book is FANTASTIC!! It's not just a book about him, it is a book about the music industry and what singers went through back in the day. I bought many of his CD's recently but for someone who didn't even know who Matt Monro was until a few months ago, this book has just put it altogether for me! I really feel like I was there with him through his struggles and successes! I would highly recommend it it to ANYONE!! It is really a great read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Matt Monro Special Reserve Book/package 7 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
I purchased the special reserve edition of this book which at first glance seems expensive however you also get a special discography book which lists all of Matts known television and radio appearances and detailed anaylisis of all the albums. It has some never before seen photographs and is the definitive reference work for Matt Monro. Also included is a CD unique to this set of rare recordings not available elsewhere. The two books and CD fit inside a special flip case which is well made and the set is a real quality item, and an absolute must for any popular music lover as well as die hard Matt Monro fans.

The book itself is written by Michele Monro Matts daughter and is written in the sense of a third party. This immediately sets this aside from other books and is written totally impartially. Nothing is left out or glossed over and personal letters are disclosed here for the first time which must have been hard for the author to include. Again which is unusual for a book like this photographs are included throughout the book as the text refers to them, rather than just having a big clump of them in the middle. There are also lots of quotes by friends and fellow stars which all add to the enjoyment of the story. I found this book very difficult to put down, and cannot recommend it highly enough. Yes it is a work of love but is an honest and definitive read. Highly Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Less would be more. 5 Dec 2013
By GNH
Format:Paperback
This is clearly a labour of love from Matt's daughter, concerned that her father's legacy would not be acknowledged, just as Matt himself never received the recognition he deserved during his lifetime. And we should be clear: Matt Monro was, in my opinion, quite simply the best English-language male ballad singer since audio recordings began. His tone, clarity, phrasing and judgement of a song have never been bettered. This book is really valuable in giving some insights into the man behind the voice, and allows us to form some judgements about why he was feted, revered even, overseas rather than at home. It also paints a sad portrait of a hectic nomadic life with a parade of hotel rooms without a soul but with a bar - and it was the drink that took him away from us far too early. So, as far as it goes, this is a revealing and worthwhile book.

My problem is that it's too long and too selective. It's crying out for some ruthless editing to remove the frankly tedious chronology of what feels like every single club appearance complete with obligatory vignette (this could go in an appendix if really necessary), and the foreword describing his last hours is unfortunately mawkish rather than engaging. It's also crying out for more about his family relationships, which are either only alluded to in passing, or in some cases dealt with in a rather spiteful and superficial manner. Maybe that would be too much to ask of someone so close to Matt as this current author, but it inevitably means that his book can be judged only as a partial success - but a necessary and valuable contribution for all that.

Gets a bit tedious as it comes across as a litany of all his show biz dates and a long list of celebrity praise. Appears he was more acclaimed than Sinatra.
