Book Description

18 Mar 2014

Climbing trees, playing with wool . . . Matilda is sure that all cats love these things, but her kitty doesn't seem very enthusiastic. Undaunted, she thinks up new ways to amuse her reluctant playmate. Tea parties? Dressing up? What about a bike ride? Or perhaps a nice book – one about dogs? As the cat goes from nonplussed to terrified, Matilda gets more and more frustrated. After all, what use is a pet if it doesn't want to play?

The relationship between Matilda and her cat is sure to strike a chord with any devoted pet owner, while the deceptively simple text and funny illustrations and satisfying, snuggly ending make this story a joy to share with even the youngest children.

Perfect for kids with a pet (whether kitten, puppy, rabbit or hamster!), for those who long for one and for cat lovers everywhere.

“will delight the youngest of readers . . . Gravett can simply do no wrong in this age range.” Daily Mail

“simple, funny and charming as one would expect from the pen of Emily Gravett” The Scotsman

“[Gravett] has an extraordinary talent to entertain, surprise and engage her readers . . . deserves to be read many times, and it will delight more each time.” – Books for Keeps

4.0 out of 5 stars Matilda's Cat 28 May 2014
By S Riaz HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Emily Gravett, winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal, is a fantastic author and illustrator for children. This charming picture book investigates the relationship betwen a young girl and her cat - as Matilda tries to discover what her cat really likes doing. Does she like to play with wool, boxes or funky hats? Her attempts to get her cat to join in playtime is not very successful, but the illustrations are engaging and will make your little one laugh. One of the things I love about Gravett's artwork is that she leaves much of the page blank, making it easy for children to concentrate on the illustrations - especially when you are reading the book aloud to a group of small children. Matilda gets a little exasperated in this story but, by the end, both Matilda and her cat have agreed on one thing that her pet really does like. This is a warm and sweet story, ideal for bedtime or storytime.

‘Matilda's Cat’ written and illustrated by Emily Gravett is children book about a young girl and her cat, although given the twist at the end of story the order of the main characters might be written in a different order.

A young girl named Matilda loves her cat very much and dressed in a cat costume full of stripes she spends all day trying to find something that her cat would like to do. But it seems that her beloved pet doesn’t share her enthusiasm and doesn’t enjoy doing the things which the little girl imagined that her cat should do.

And then funny and interesting twist will happen, which will lead story to become clearer to the young reader…

‘Matilda's Cat’ is another charming story made by Emily Gravett who with her story and expressive illustrations manages to intrigue the children's imagination while with her twist at the end shows how easily even in the picture book format can make an entertaining psychological game in which reader will be pulled.

Therefore, Emily Gravett book can be recommended not only for young lovers of cats, pets, or the author's opus, but also to all those who seek a bit more in picture books than the beautiful illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Matilda's Cat loved by Matilda's Mum! 18 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Our younger daughter, a cat lover, gave birth to her first baby in January 2013. They have named their daughter Matilda. This is Matilda's first book for her library. The book is written with charm and neatly illustrated. Mum has already read the book to Matilda. We expect "Matilda's Cat" to be treasured for a long time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant 3 Sep 2012
Format:Hardcover
This is another gem from Emily Gravett, surely one of the best picture book writers/artists to emerge in recent years.

The story has Gravett's typical charm and wit, as Matilda lists the things her cat likes to do: playing with balls of wool, tea parties, dressing up... From the pictures, however, you can see that the beleagured cat is not so sure! Cue plenty of giggles from your little ones.

The illustrations are lively and gorgeous and the expressions on the cat's face are hilarious, and will be recognized by anyone with pets (especially if they also have small children!). The end is really lovely and heartwarming, and celebrates the love and companionship between pets and their humans. Thumbs - and paws - up all round.

5.0 out of 5 stars both young ones and parents will enjoy 28 Mar 2014
By Gail Cooke TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Most will agree that baby kittens are adorable. However, although the cat belonging to Matilda is full grown and has a mind of her own she is still irresistible. Much of her allure is due to the fetching illustrations by Emily Gravett (winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Award for Illustration). All the illustrations are full pages and brightly colored. Each depicts a scene easily recognized by young readers - a tea party, riding a bike, drawing, etc.

Each page shows us an activity that Matilda's cat doesn't care for, and the final page shows us what she really likes best of all. The ending will please both parents and youngsters.

Matilda's Cat is a happy fun story highlighting the loving relationship between a child and her pet, and is best enjoyed by 4 to 8 year olds.
