Product Description

Review

'Perfectly pitched for Key Stage 2, a mix of facts, humour and novelty flaps...This series is proof that the right non-fiction still sells' - The Bookseller; 'A super collection of information books from Usborne, which really engage the reader by providing interesting information, colourful graphics and plenty of flaps with yet more information' - Parents in Touch; 'Maths is, according to this addition to Usborne's popular See Inside series "a way of finding out about the world". With maths, "you can count things, and measure things, and solve all sorts of problems". The emphasis is not on how to do it, but rather on the uses maths can be put to and the enjoyment to be found in playing with mathematical ideas. The focus is on applying maths to everyday functions and the full colour pages are cheerfully illustrated with small figures busily engaged in a variety of activities. Final spreads add to the prevailing sense of fun with the games that employ mathematical and logical skills. While the maths covered loosely corresponds to, and builds on, that learned in years 3 and 4, confident younger mathematicians will enjoy exploring the new ideas to be found here' - Guardian Education

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for young and old.... 15 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I got this for my 6 year old daughter as a reference for her now she is doing more in maths lessons at school, although it has some maths that she wont be needing for a long time yet,
For example: it has a flap that reads "for any size circle the circumference divided by the diameter always comes out as (the symbol for Pi)" Which i don't think my 6 year old is going to be even told about for years to come yet, however as i was reading it i do think it will give me the snipets to help me rememeber things that will help my daughter when the time comes.
There is so much information in this book and it is presented so well with simple explanations. I will be buying other 'see inside' books as i think usborne books are fantastic.
In response to another review regarding the wrong answer, my book reads: "Fungus fills half the room. If it doubles every hour, how long before it fills 4 rooms of equal size?" Then under the flap reads "The fungus already fills half a room. In 1 hour it will fill a whole room. In 2 hours it will fill 2 rooms. So in 3 hours it will fill 4 rooms of equal size" Which i believe is correct.

2.0 out of 5 stars Another mistake from this book 29 May 2013
Format:Hardcover
One of the reviews here has indicated a mistake in the solution of the problem with fungus on page 12.

My 8 y.o. son has just spotted another one on page 7. An explanation says:

"You can calculate the volume of a cube by multiplying its length, width and height.

Each side of this cube measures 3sm.

3x3x3=9 (!!!!)

So the volume of the cube is 9 sm3. (!!!!)"

That is really incredible. If the fungus's problem is about geometrical progression - a more or less complicated thing - this one is just about the basics of multiplication/adding. My son said: "But we get nine when we add 3, 3 and 3, not when we multiply them". Or may be the authors confused the area with the volume of the cube which is anyway inexcusable. BTW, the book has two authors AND a maths education expert!

3.0 out of 5 stars A nicely done but flawed book 20 Aug 2010
By M. Wang
Format:Hardcover
One example from the book:
"Fungus fills half the room. If it doubles every hour. How long before it fills 4 rooms of equal size?"
Lifting flap showed the answer 4 after I spent 10 minutes guiding my 6 year old to get to the anwser 3.
Have I lost my wit growing older or should there be someone to blame for the quality of this book?

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent "See Inside" title! 4 Feb 2010
By A. Milne TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This lovely book gives a good overview of basic maths concepts. It starts off with "meet the numbers" where different methods of counting and then number lines, negative numbers and prime numbers, (to name but a few) are introduced. There are, as usual, lots of flaps to lift with further explanations behind and lots of fantastic, bright and lively illustrations with funny captions. It also covers maths puzzles and games, lots of concepts to do with shapes, everyday maths and chance, all treated with the same humour and great illustrations.

My little boy absolutely loves his maths, so when he saw this book his eyes nearly popped out of his head and he has loved dipping into it! For a child that isn't so maths mad...well I'm not sure they'd find it as totally enthralling as my son has, but it may be interesting to them as it shows maths in quite a different, and fun, light. I would say that this book is probably most suited to ages 7 and up.
