I bought this book a few weeks ago with a view to eventually tutoring students. There are some elements that turn me off, but that`s just personal taste. It is reasonably written, and gives lots of examples in each area, but there are a few mistakes i`ve noticed so far...on page 10, where it sais"harder examples" for the binomial theorem, the example is completely WRONG..the coefficient of x to the power 5 in the expansion is -6, not 21. Page 11, a lot of the answers are wrong. Page 12, it took me 30 minutes to answer Qn. 10 a (by computer!) - i.e, your paper answer would probably take over an hour! The explanation on how to get the limit "e" on page 42 is bogus - first, you have to use something unknown to students at this level called L`Hopital`s rule, and the limit is Lna = Lne only if a=e! Page 78 "shows" the student how to solve definite integrals which are improper (the book doesnt call them that), whereas all you have to do is substitute the limit the integrand is undefined for by X (big x) and take the limit as x approaches the undefind value. Apart from this (proof readers WAKE UP!) this book is reasonable. Have faith in your own ability at maths, and don`t get down at the amount of wrong answers - there aren`t that many!

This is the first in the series of textbooks written for the Advanced Higher Mathematics course. This book covers all the topics in the first compulsory unit of the course and is written in a way that helps you ease into flow of work required. It provides excellent notes on the background mathematics and how they should be tackled. These notes are backed up with some worked examples.
The book provides the student with numerous practice questions to help perfect their skills and answers are provided for all of these. However, these are written in the form of raw answers and not fully written solutions.
As the first textbook written for the course it is impossible to compare it against anything previously in print. The book has certainly established a good standard for other textbooks to follow and without doubt has been a great help during my course and revision. Without a tool like this it would be much harder to achieve a good result.
