There are many types of cheap lava lamps on the market, and at first sight they might seem to be jujst as good as this rather a bit more expensive Mathmos Original.

But don't be fooled!!!

In this case, cheap really means cheap quality, and having bought a cheap one just one month before I was given a proper Mathmos one for my 26th birthday, trust me, I do know the difference. (I am turning 36 soon, so can you guess what I am about to say?)

The Mathmos lamp that was given to me is still standing on my shelf so that I can see it while I am in bed reading, whereas the cheap one lost all the colour within one year.
The colours in the Mathmos one are still as bright as on the day I first switched it on, and I have bought this one recently so that I have two different ones (the one I was given almost ten years ago is green with blue).

In some cases, quality has it's price, and that is definitely the case with Mathmos lamps, because what use is it to spend 10 quid for something that won't even last a year, whereas this one lasts 10 years and more?

I'd rather go for the original.

Made in The UK, (original Poole factory complex).

High quality glass bottles, properly made electrical connections, polished chrome metal fittings, rich vibrant long lasting colours, great service from Mathmos, spares available (ever dented a cap top)? ..& proven long lasting product.

I put my Mathmos collection through "consumer hell" & they come up trumps time & time again, spares & support on the other end of a uk phoneline, well designed, stable of lava lamps!
This one, amongst others is about as iconic as it gets, when you see a lava lamp on a tv set it's invariably a mathmos, not some no-name dubious knock off, why? they're instantly recogniseable, & work for decades.

This model slots together so easily (the fins) & is stable enough for me to have had it in my daughters room since she was 4, prior to that it was a jet version as they're even safer in terms of stability.

Interchangeable oil / wax colour bottles, so change as you change your decor if you so wish, these bottles are from the smaller range "Astro-baby" ..so any you fancy from that range will fit in this model, interchangeable nature of the bottles has stood Mathmos in good stead throughout it's long life.

The glass bottles are tough, I've never managed to break one yet (thank god)

For the energy conscious (me too) these take a 25 watt screw in bulb so make fdr a pretty low wattage nightlight or decoration.

A really cold room will slow the wax but typically expect some movement within 40 minutes or so.

I leave mine on all night & it's fine! (just in case you were wondering) ...as good as the day it was bought in terms of colour, vibrancy etc (no decay).

Do keep them out of harsh sunlight which WILL GRADUALLY make the wax colour fade, but such is the high quality of mathmos it will take some doing & even them will look better than a cheapo version.

Enjoy!

Small product big price! 12 April 2011
By Conrad
Colour Name:Violet/Orange
At the end of the day I got a lava lamp. However, because of its large price i expected it to be much bigger better than other lava lamps i have, sadly that was not the case. You can get a good lava lamp for about £10.00, where as, for basically the same product they are charging 6x the price! I feel a little ripped off.
