"The Mathematician's Delight", a paperback by W.W. Sawer, first published Aug.1,1943 was an excellent publication I read at an early age and it was _extremely_ well written.
From the simple fundamental principles of mathemathics all the way to Calculus and Probability; without the incomprehensible intellectual tripe that most books on mathematics contain.
It is a highly recommendable read even for the non-mathematically inclined; you will certainly be enlightened as to 'how, why and what for', whether you have zero knowledge or a degree in mathematics to start with.
This is a book of facts written in the style of a good novel where the story of mathematics unfolds in digestable measures for any age-group, young or old.
I discovered this book in the school library 33 years ago (I was 14 then) and was impressed at how it made maths such an interesting and enjoyable subject. Its approach - observing patterns, etc. - continues to be useful and relevant and I have recommended it to friends who have problems with maths, the most recent one being last year! I am getting a copy for my daughters who are 12 and 13. (Let me add, for the avoidance of doubt, that I am not a mathematician.)
The cover has been brought up-to-date but the layout and presentation of the contents could do with some modernising.
This book is a classic. Although now a little dated it is still a first rate introduction to such complexities as The Calculus. It is recommended for all levels of mathematician.
