Review

This is the hilarious third instalment in Cathy Hopkins's Mates and Dates series, focusing on Nesta's story of class, prejudice and romance. Nesta is cool - beautiful, clever and brimming with confidence. Heads turn whenever she is around and she easily wins the affections of the gorgeous Simon. But her confidence begins to crumble when she discovers Simon's upper-class background at a time when her own family's fortunes are in free fall. Matters are made worse by the Portobello Princesses - Simon's sister Tanya and the super-snob Cressida - who do their best to make Nesta feel inferior and out of her depth. With her confidence spiralling into oblivion, Nesta only seems to make things worse by gambling in an attempt to make some money and getting drunk at Izzie's big debut as a singer with King Noz. Lucy and Izzie come to her rescue and together they help her to get things back in perspective and regain her confidence. This is easily the best of the series so far. It covers many difficult subjects - class, snobbery, gambling and racism - but with a great deal of humour that keeps everything in perspective. There is some great comedy, especially when Nesta talks of the Portobello Princesses (aka the Mobile Sloanes and the Pedigree Chums). There are lots of touches to appeal to readers, in particular the use of text messaging and the use of diary entries to fill out the story. As with its predecessors this will be loved by younger teenage girls. --Kirkus UK

Synopsis

TRADE EDITION: Age 12+ Nesta has met the perfect boy: good-looking, fun, sweet. But there are problems too. Simon's from a rich, upper-class background with a lifestyle to match and it's difficult for Nesta to keep up. And then there's Simon's friend Cressida. The ice queen. The Portobello Princess. Not one to give in, Nesta is determined to impress the new crowd, but finds herself out of her depth. Luckily she has Lucy and Izzie to help her reassess what really matters --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it from the beginning to the end!! 8 Sep 2002
Format:Paperback
This book I couldn't put down I read it from the beginning to the end in one day! Nesta is seriously in love with Simon. But there's problems! Nesta has a stuck up girl on her mind, even worse she's Simon's mate! Her name is Cressida and she is especially mean to Nesta until Tony Nesta's handsom brother comes along. She doesn't tease her or be nice to her when Tony's around, all she does is ignore her! There's other problems. Simon is upper class and Nesta just can't keep up. Oh no what shall she do...

I was bought Mates, Dates & Portobello Princesses for Christmas, along with Mates, Dates and Cosmic Kisses. I loved both books, but particularly Portobello Princesses, because the challenges and problems seemed to be aimed at me. I started reading this on Boxing Day afternoon and had finished by the evening as I just couldn't put it down! Any teenager, or trainee teenager (as I am) should read this book. Every time I turned a page - there I was!!! - If you don't enjoy this book then you've obviously not started being a teenager yet! Great books, can't wait to read the others as they come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mates, date and portobella princesses.... 22 Feb 2005

..... i got this book for christmas and would like to say its GREAT! it gives a very realistic outlook on the life of a teenage girl, the characters being very true to life as well. You have a real mix of personalities in this book, from shy and quiet to loud and confident! The book is about the main character, Nester, falling for a boy from a slightly different background to hers! It shows a real contrast of life styles. Although this is number 3 in the series, i havnt read any of the others but the book was very easy to get into and it didnt take me long to understand the characters. Thsi book is fantastic....... the story is easy to follow and i cant wait to rea the others in the series!
