Book Description

1 Nov 2012

Tired of the clichés often trotted out about craft, Perri Lewis makes it her task to bring the world of making into the 21st century.

In Material World, Perri enlists the help of luminaries from the worlds of art, craft, design and fashion to share their knowledge and advice. Among these include Rob Ryan, Emma Bridgewater, Grayson Perry, Philip Treacy, Tatty Devine, Topshop and Tracey Emin. Instead of just giving the reader individual projects, you can learn the techniques for crafts such as paper-cutting, dress-making, printing, encrusting, leather work and tailoring. However, if you prefer more guidance, there are 15 projects to make, including découpage shoes, a patchwork Louis chair and a printed scarf.

With the compiled words of wisdom of these experts, and Perri's own timeless advice, you'll be up and running with scissors in no time.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last 21st Century Stuff for Craft 8 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having got a copy from Amazon [pretty quick too] I poured over the pages and was so pleased to not find a tea cosy project anywhere.
This is a book that you can read as well as learn from and will sit on the coffee table as well as the craft shelf.
Thinks that she may become the Jamie Oliver of the craft world soon if not already taken that mantle.
Love the idea for the shoes but might try a more blokey version - its not just a girlie book guys!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to the world of craft 4 Nov 2012
By F. Pullen TOP 500 REVIEWER
This is a pretty unique craft book instead of just giving you projects and techniques Perri shares her knowledge (and that of many industry leaders) on all things craft related.

Perri covers 15 different techniques in the book, including embroidery, screen printing, millinery, embellishment, tailoring and appliqué. Each chapter starts with a how to guide, followed by 2 pages of useful tips and advice from relevant experts, advice on solving common problems and then leads into a project. Perri aims to inspire you to explore your own creativity rather than just follow projects so after each project there is a page of ideas and tips on how to take the technique further.T-shirt dress project from Material World

In between each technique chapter there are a few pages giving advice on all different things craft related, including going to craft groups, where to find good advice on the internet and turning your crafts into a business. The experts featured include Amy Butler, Rob Ryan, Kaffe Fassett and some of our customers including The Make Lounge and Ruth Singer.

A great guide to the world of crafting as well as giving you several technique guides and projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funky and a Great Guide! 18 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A delightful book which reminded me of crafts I learned years ago and did really badly. Perri's guide is written in warm accessible language with clear illustrations. She, and her guest contributors, have made me my fingers itch to get started again AND given the information I need to enjoy the results!
