Book Description

15 Jun 2009
Each of the pairs of quilts in this gorgeous new book by quilters Sarah Fielke and Kathy Doughty springs from a single idea or shared moment of inspiration. The results - like non-identical twins - are inextricably linked, yet intriguingly different. With their reinterpretation of traditional designs, as well as a characteristic bold use of colour and dazzling patterns, Sarah's and Kathy's quilts will appeal to quilters of all levels - from new quilt-makers looking for the next challenge, to experienced quilters ready to embrace some of the more complex projects. With practical step-by-step instructions, a comprehensive basics section and glorious photographs, this is a book to make your fingers tingle with sheer inspiration. Key points: Material Obsession Two features practical, user-friendly patterns for inspiring and colourful quilts; includes projects suitable for all levels - stimulating new quilters to explore their own creativity and challenging more experienced quilters to go on pushing the boundaries; a detailed techniques section complete with step-by-step photographs provides a visual guide to patchwork and quilting; strong sales for the first book indicate that interest will be high in this follow-up book to stretch and inspire the worldwide community of quilters

5.0 out of 5 stars a real exhibition of quilts 4 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
I hesitated before buying this book without looking inside, could it be as good as the first I wondered, or would it be too similar? Don't worry, it's brilliant! It's really quite different from the first book, all very original and beautiful to read over a longer period of time. Although the presentation follows the first book the quilts lie before you like an exhibition, you really need to move around a bit more slowly and look at each one individually, there's lots to take in. Maybe the quilts are less easy to try for yourself than those in the first book, you'll be unable to match the authors' fabrics but for taking some careful steps on your own, away from kits and exact copies, these really are outstanding projects, both to look at and to set your mind racing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book 18 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I pre ordered this book and wasn't disapointed when it arrived. I'm newish to quilting and would have found the projects ambisous at first but the instructions are clear, photos beautiful and like no other quilting book I have bought.
I think worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars As Good as their previous book. 22 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
I was pleasantly surprised. This publication is every bit as good as their previous publication. I liked the fact that they also tried using different techniques including foundation - a particular favourite of mine. It felt more like a joint venture rather than one doing one quilt and then the other one taking a turn. I lent this book to a friend who is a more experienced quilter than me and she also really liked it. The patterns which are in wallet in the back are very clear and easy to use. All I need now is the time to start one. I found it pleasing that they did not necessarily advocate going out and buying loads of material to start a project especially at the moment when we are all trying to spend less. I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worse than book 1
This book is a waste of money just like the first book. The authors have simply thrown together as many clashing colours as possible and made them into 'art'. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely ideas!
Love the book, Ideas are great & inspiring; but as a beginner quilter I feel that I'm not quite ready to tackle even the simpler quilts. Saying that, it is a truly beautiful book.

Excellent follow up to Material Obsession. The Material Girls' style is so fresh and their use of colour stimulating. It makes me want to rummage in my stash and get piecing. Read more
