As you may expect, Matching Jack is in many ways a standard tear-jerker movie. It's a fairly easy plot to predict if you know this genre but what it lacks in originality it makes up for in beautiful cinematography, great acting and a lot of heart. The plot about a desperate wife searching for a bone marrow donor for her young son Jack (Tom Russell) feels a little lacklustre at times but holds up fairly well, though it takes a firm backseat to the experiences of the characters as they try to fight their way through such difficult times which, in my opinion, is how it should be.

The strength of the film definitely comes from the individual performances. James Nesbit is superb as the everyman father of Finn (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who shares a room with Jack and is also battling Leukaemia. The relationship between Finn and Jack is very genuine and both young actors do a great job. Tom Russell is especially worth pointing out, a great choice for the lead as, like Nesbit, he's just so damn likeable. The performances from the rest of the cast are pretty strong too, with Nicole Gulasekharam stealing the show towards the end. The characters draw you in and guide you on their journey of pain, loss and joy (some scenes had me laughing out loud) and bring the film to life.

If you're a fan of tear-jerkers this will satisfy you and even if you're not it's worth checking out to see some fantastic acting. Left me feeling sad but uplifted.

Nadia Tass is one of Australia's finest directors. David Parker is a superb cinematographer. Matching Jack is a testament to the human spirit in demonstrating that sometimes inevitable clashes between hope and reality are not necessarily zero-sum games. It is a miraculous film that balances great passions for children and fidelity with truthful characters, drama and warmth. If you're a parent, or have been wronged in a relationship, or have the wits to know right from wrong and act accordingly, you'll be drawn into this picture from the get-go. And the film also enjoys fine Melbourne locations, like many of Tass's films. The actors are uniformly wonderful and genuine. Not to be missed.

A very emotional story with a touch of humour, well worth watching but keep the tissues handy. Don't you just love a sob story?
