I grew up on English teams winning the European Cup (proper title) year in year out. This was the era of Dalglish and Rush, Francis and Robertson, Withe & Spink, Rummenigge, Boniek & Platini. Only title holders wer allowed to enter and it was straight knockout from round one. Those glorious nights are relived by many of the men who were the heroes of winning teams in this fantastic book. From Paco Gento of the great Real Madrid side which dominated the early years of the competition, through legends such as Mazzola, Coluna, Stepney, Hidalgo, Rep, Roth and Rossi, to the more modern Tassotti of Milan, Canizares of Real Madrid and Jamie Carragher of Liverpool, each player reveals some fantastic stories about how they won the Cup.
Canizares talks about coming on as a sub and making some crucial saves, Carragher still can't believe they managed to turn the game around against Milan - and has no idea how they did it, while Alex Stepney's chapter on the 1968 is really interesting as he discusses coming into the side early in the season and helping them win the biggest prize there is. He thought it would be like that every year!
This is a fascinating book and well worth adding to the libray.
