5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent tribute to a national institution 13 Sep 2014

When Match of the Day was first broadcast in 1964 it only drew 20,000 viewers; if a prime-time Saturday night TV show had similar viewing figures today it almost certainly wouldn't be on again the following week. Thankfully things were different in those days and MOTD was allowed to develop and today it is must see Saturday night viewing in millions of homes. This season marks Match of the Days fiftieth year and to celebrate that the BBC have brought out this book. They have done a good job of it too because Match of the Day 50 Years really is a brilliant publication.

Starting with the 1964-65 season, MOTD's first, the book gives an overview of the important events of each campaign, with reports on what the compilers have decided was the top match of that season and a short piece about that years the player of the year. Additionally, there are sections about the World Cup's that have been held over the last fifty years and also the 1996 European Championship which was held in England. So as we don't forget why this book has been published, there are also pieces related to MOTD - the commentators, producers, theme tune and numerous other MOTD things of interest. The total package is excellent; the articles are all well written, the lay-out is pleasing on the eye and the photographs are attractive and well chosen.

All on all I would state that if you are looking for a gift for a football supporter you will be on a winner with if you choose this book. Older supporters will enjoy basking in the memories of seasons gone by and younger readers will perhaps be able to learn a bit more about those teams and players that their dad's are always going on about.
