Product Description

The Matarese Circle are the Corsican Brotherhood. Terrifying killers, their power could plunge the world into chaos and destruction within two years. Only two rival spies - and one mysterious woman - can stop them. Brandon Scofield, CIA, and the West's most professional assassin, and Vasili Taleniekov, former KGB, now wanted by the Politburo. They share a genius for espionage - and a life of terror and explosive violence. Sworn enemies, Scofield and Taleniekov have vowed to terminate each other, but now they must become allies. Because only they possess the brutal skills and ice-cold nerves vital to destroy an international circle of killers: the Matarese . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Ludlum, 16 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Having seen The Bourne Identity film and learning it was adapted from a book I was interested in reading it. It was read within a matter of days followed by Supremacy and Ultimatum. Now hooked on Ludlum's work I bought more.
The Matarese Circle is a brilliant read. Fast-paced, exciting and the real crux of the book is the unlikely partnership of it's two lead roles - Scofield and Taleniekov. Ludlum's description of the action is always good and it doesn't disappoint in this book.
If you like Ludlum this book is a must. Also, The Janson Directive is highly recommended too.
Someone should make more of Ludlum's books into films.

4.0 out of 5 stars The next Ludlum movie!, 18 Jan 2007

Robert Ludlum... you either hate his books, or you like them, and this book I love!!!

After Jason Bourne, probably his two best two characters!

In recent years a few of his films have been made in to movies, and this one should really be next!

After the "Bourne Identity", it is probably Roberts best page-turner and a really gripping story!

Only down side is Roberst lack of being able to write a man-woman relationship and not make it sound like a bad eppisode of "Hart to Hart", but if you look past the "Oh my Darling how much I love you" stuff, it is a REALLY great story and a great addition to anyones book shelf!

3.0 out of 5 stars A slightly dated 1970s thriller., 31 Dec 2007
By J. Bowen "Jamie Bowen" (Hampstead London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In this book, two 1970s spys (one from the CIA, th other from the KGB) have to come together from oposite sides of the Iron Curtain to fight The Matarese Council, a group of businessmen who try to pit governments against each other in an attempt to gain power, money and influence on both sides of any conflict (a conflict often manufacturered by them).

I'm not alogether sure about this book. On occasions I've read books that have been set in the 1970s and the author often likes to remind the reader about the amount of research he did about the period. There's none of that showing off in this book, because it was written in the 1970s for a 1970s audience (who presumeably knew much of what he was talking about first hand).

Having said that, however, I will say that the book might feel dated to the reader now, because it appeals to a 1970s sensibility, rather than a 2000s one and trust me, there's a difference. The other thing is, other than fights, not much happens for long periods. It took a third of the book to bring the two agents together (when having them being ordered would have achieved as much in 200 less pages). It took another third of a book for the two agents to come up with a plan, so by the time the agents finally did something I was mentally urging them to get on with it already.

So all in all not a great book, but it might occupy you if you've nothing to entertain you on a long flight!
