MATAGORDA + THE FIRST FAST DRAW Louis L'Amour Kindle Double Edition

I have always been a great fan of western novels since I started reading them as a boy in the early fifties and over the years have amassed a large collection of over 2000 mainly paperback copies some of which I am now replacing with Kindle Editions as moving from a large house to a centre city apartment means a reduction of several hundred feet of shelving. This re-organisation has also given me the chance to revisit books that I have not read for a while. These are two of his earlier full length novels both set in Texas just after the end of the American Civil War.

Louis L'Amour is in my opinion not only one of the most prolific but undisputedly the best writer of western fiction of the latter half of the 20th. Century and his work always hits the target for me; they are well written, they have excellent storylines, well filled out characters and above all are very 'readable'; the sort of book that stays on your bookshelf and will get revisited over and over through the years. I have probably read and re-read my favourites at least six or eight times during the past 60 years or so.

THE FIRST FAST DRAW 1959

Cullen Baker returns to Texas after the war to find everything changed and his home county under the control of reconstructionists and 'carpetbaggers' and soon finds himself framed for crimes that he did not commit. With odds of twenty to one Baker needs to find a means of giving himself an edge in the gun battles to come.

Good average Louis L'amour westerns.
Typical entertaining stories.
Matagorda shades it for me over First Fast draw.
To get the two together is great value.

these two stories are right up to Louis L'amours usual standard. he makes the reader feel as though he is part of the action.

Both books were exciting with the main characters exactly what you want them to be. Likeable, tough and honest.
You start to look how many pages left because you do not want the story to finish.
