Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Appropriately named, the ORKA oven mitt looks like a whale. It will swim in to pull lobsters from boiling water or allow you to lift a basket of French fries from the deep fryer. Made of non-porous, food-grade silicone, the mitt is designed to withstand temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius without melting, staining or letting in moisture. This makes the ORKA ideal for cooking with boiling water or oil or using over grills or open flames. Slip-resistant "teeth" on the mitt’s grasping surface provide a sure grip when lifting greasy or wet pots. At 11 inches long, the mitt is long enough to protect the forearm and fit either right or left hands of all sizes. For easy cleaning, the ORKA goes into the dishwasher with the rest of your pots and pans. This product was the top gadget at the 2002 Excellence in Housewares Awards and has also been featured on Oprah, Good Morning America and CNN. --Cristina Vaamonde

Product Description

The translucent blue mitt fits either hand and features an advanced ribbed design that provides a firm, steady grip with hot handles and grills. It's even strong enough to handle charcoal, fat and oil! The Orka is the only waterproof cooking mitt, so it protects you from boiling water too. The Mitt resists stains, is heat resistant up to 300°C and does not deteriorate on contact with heat. It's washable under the tap, in the dishwasher or washing machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars A total shock., 23 Oct 2003
This item came to me free during an amazon promotion where if you spend £20 on kitchen goods, you get it free. After laughing at the unusual looking item, I stuck it in a drawer - the only reason I got it because it was free, and looked like a gimmick. How wrong I was! I use it all the time as an oven mitt, and wear it on one hand whilst washing up, allowing me to use extremely hot water for a better clean. It's great for barbecues, and really easy to clean afterwards because it does not burn and fat doesnt stick to it. I have never reviewed on Amazon before, but this item needs publicity, because I would not have touched it with a bargepole, now I can't live without it.

4.0 out of 5 stars If the mitt fits ... wear it !, 19 Oct 2003

This product refreshingly does exactly what it is intended to do - and more. Safe to use and attractive (if a little unusual ...) to look at, I can highly recommend this as a worthwhile addition to your kitchen "tools".

However, one word of warning: The mitt is only available in one universal size. Personally, I find it a little large and therefore gripping / holding things with it on is not as easy as it perhaps could be. I only mention this because I think I havee big hands, so perhaps the mitt is not so "handy" for people with small hands?

Other than that observation, this clever product comes highly recommended indeed. If the mitt fits, wear it!

5.0 out of 5 stars ORKA mitt, 10 Sep 2003
One of the finest kitchen products ever. A bit strange to use at first, but after a little practice you will soon get used to it.
Excellent safety protection but I recommend buying two if you use roasting pans etc. as they shouldn't be removed from the oven single handed. It's great not to be nursing a burn after cooking Sunday lunch - worth the money for that alone!

Another great advantage is being able to use them in boiling water - hot wet cloths can be handled like cold ones with the ORKA.

Grease and fat doesn't stick to them so they are very easy to clean.

Be safe - get an ORKA or two, they don't burst into flames like tea towels do!
