Product Description

Product Description

Do you have rushes of fear accompanied by a pounding heart, trembling, dizziness, and feelings of unreality that make you think you're sick, dying, or losing your mind? Do these feelings interfere with your normal daily routine, or prevent you from doing things you would normally do? If you are prone to panic attacks and constantly worry about when the next attack may come, you may suffer from panic disorder and/or agoraphobia. Though panic disorder seems irrational and uncontrollable, it has been proven that a treatment like the one outlined in this book can help you take control of your life. Now in its 4th edition, Mastery of Your Anxiety and Panic, Client Workbook has been updated to include strategies and techniques for dealing with both panic disorder and agoraphobia. The program outlined is based on the principles of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and is organised by skill, with each chapter building on the one before it. You will earn the importance of record-keeping and monitoring your progress, as well as breathing techniques and thinking skills. The main focus of the treatment involves learning how to face agoraphobic situations and the scary physical symptoms of panic from an entirely new perspective. Self-assessment quizzes, homework exercises, and interactive forms allow you to become an active participant in your treatment. Over time, you will learn to manage your panic attacks, anxiety about panic, and avoidance of panic and agoraphobic situations. This workbook is a one-of-a-kind resource that has been recommended for use by public health services around the world. It allows you to work alongside your therapist to personalise your treatment strategy and learn recovery skills that are useful for a lifetime.

I often use the 'Treatment That Works' workbooks with clients in our CBT practice. I find that they are really useful in helping the client to focus on the work that they need to do in-between sesions. It is also very useful for those clients who prefer to engage in therapy 'on-line' or by telephone rather than face-to-face.

If you (the client) commit to putting the time in to working through each chapter, it can really help you to address and overcome the issues of anxiety / panic that you are currently experiencing.

As with many of the series of workbooks, this particular workbook on ANXIETY & PANIC can be used as a 'Self-Help' workbook. If you feel that you may not need the support of a CBT therapist, I would suggest that this is one of the better workbooks on the market. The author is very credible and highly respected in the field of CBT. You could always consult with a CBT therapist if you feel that you need more than the workbook offers. If so, ask if they have heard f the workbook and whether they will be prepared to use it as part of your therapy sessions. This could lead to you needing less sessions with the therapist and thereby save you money!

If you are committed to curing yourself get this workbook... 1 July 2007

Hi.
I've suffered on and off from acute generalized anxiety and panic attacks for the last 7 years.

After 4 weeks of following this workbook I am now feeling better than I have for quite some time and am making definite confident inroads into a freeing myself from this debilitating condition.

Let me first point out that this is NOT a "magic pill" (I've searched years for such and they don't exist). This workbook will take time and effort on your part. The end result however will be a life free of anxiety and panic and a trail back to feeling, thinking and acting "normal" again.

This workbook is much more simple to understand and follow compared to other CBT books I've read (and there are many). The steps are very easy to follow and the principles have been reduced down to their bare elements which I found helped enormously when dealing with issues amid panic and anxiety. Most importantly though, through constant practice and "homework" it en grains the thinking and ultimately bends our irrational beliefs/fears back to where they should be. Normal!

I've been following the program through with a psychologist who practices CBT and have found this beneficial. That said though, I'm also of the firm belief that it's been 90% my own work which has made the difference so if you aren't able to afford or have problems seeing someone I'm still convinced this workbook will work wonders for you.

In short this is a fantastic workbook which has changed life for me and will for you if you have the guts to make a commitment, accept some changes and start living again to your full potential.

If I can so can you!

Best of the bunch 26 Feb 2009

This is the best book on the topic that I have read, and I've read many. Clear, very thorough, and practical. The therapist's guide provides the most detailed and yet easy to read explanations of such topics as hyperventilation, hypoglycemia, the adrenalin response and many other topics and how they contribute to anxiety and panic; and equally important, how to correct their effects. For therapists like me, the therapist's guide provides an excellent roadmap to helping patients. This companion worksbook designed for patients provides easy to use forms that can be copied from the book or from a download site on the web they can be printed. I highly recommend this book and Barlow's other books, both the therapist's guide and the workbook for patients. While many patients may be able to use the workbook alone to overcome their condition, more complicated situations, or for people who need the extra structure of counseling sessions; either way the workbook is a valuable resource.

Excellent book - has helped many of my patients! 28 Jun 2009

This book is fabulous! I have had several people in the last few weeks who have been helped immensely by the exercises and educational sections. I highly recommend this to counselors and to individuals with anxiety or panic attacks. Word of warning about buying the electronic version though... It will only let you print a limited number of pages (though it advertises that you can print out the book, but with a small disclaimer about different books having different limits)so honestly I recommend buying the actual book and not the electronic version!
