When the game first started I had high hopes - the cutscenes were impressive and the opening scene in the restaurant seemed to run smoothly and look pretty impressive. The game crosses between you playing as a vietnam war veteran and as a member of the mob, the story told through a series of flashbacks. This should work well - however there are a number of mob games that work far better on the PS2 and a number of war games that also play better. In fact this is one of the worst shooters I have played is on the console.
It soon becomes obvious that the AI of the enemy is hopeless. They will stand right in front of you as you shoot at them rather than run for cover. Taking cover yourself is pointless as enemies frequently manage to shoot through whatever cover you take and most of the time you won't be able to shoot them when taking cover! At one point I was attempting to shoot an enemy at the other side of the fence at long range. After using half my ammo I risked moving in for a closer shot. In the end I stood the other end of the fence and still couldn't get a hit. He just stood there appearing to do the moon walk making no attempt to shoot back. I later realised I wasn't supposed to kill him until the next stage! There are a number of glitches such as this that end up being infuriating. There is no skill involved at all, just walk into a room shoot everyone, then do the same in the next room. Such brainless games can be fun, and can be a welcome relief from more complex shooters such as Call of Duty. But if they are done badly they are just annoying, and that is exactly what this game is.
I ended up giving up about 1/4 of the way through after numerous attempts to finish a level where the extent of the enemy was just ludicrous and impossible to get through without taking major damage. The fact that they could shoot me at long range whereas I couldn't, and had no option but to run into open gun fire before returning fire just summed it all up for me.
The game has a good soundtrack but is no recommendation. If in any doubt check out the review on Gamespot (I really wish I had before buying it) and buy another of the many shooters available on PS2. I have exhausted the genre now but would much rather play say killzone, Return to castle wolfenstein, call of duty or medal of honour than be forced into playing this dross.
One point of note is that the software house apparently ditched this game and then at the point of going bust released it anyway! A poor reputation obviously wasn't going to do them any harm so they obviously decided that releasing it onto an unsuspecting public and making some bucks wouldn't hurt. Shame on them.
