Book Description

7 Jan 2010 0007322038 978-0007322039

The second installment of the thrilling maritime adventure; two mighty empires battle each other for control of the high seas.

Atticus is the young captain of the Aquila, the flagship of the attack fleet of the Roman navy. But his commander is a young upstart whose position has been purchased rather than earned. Bound to obey his inexperienced commander's rash orders, Atticus sails straight into a carefully-laid trap. In the battle that follows, it is only by defying his commander that he can pull his men back from the brink of defeat.

But Atticus will pay a high price for his defiance, and, as he is summoned to Rome, he realises he has created a powerful enemy. And, despite his friendship with Septimus, a Roman centurion, Atticus is dangerously unversed in the politics of the Roman senate.

So, Atticus finds himself facing battles both at sea against an ever-more ferocious enemy and on his own ship by those close to home who want their revenge.

Culminating in one of the greatest sea battles of classical times, Captain of Rome is a stirring and powerful novel and John Stack is a born storyteller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read, thoguh it has its faults 1 Mar 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read the first and second instalments of this new series and all in all, have liked them both. I do however have some criticisms of the second book that I'd like to share.

In my opinion, the two main characters Septimus and Atticus are interesting and you actually care what happens to them. The bad guy in this particular book is a chap called Varro. He is the bit that spoils a good book for me. He is a weak pantomime villain bad guy who actually rather irritated me by the end of the book. There are other charracters that fit the mould as well, but I will let the reader judge these

There were other faults, perhaps the author takes a bit too long to get to the point at some sections of the book and I found myself skipping paragraphs at a time, knowing that I am not missing anything.

Other reviewers have compared John Stack to Iggulden and Cornwell. I would see where he is coming from, but we already have so many Igguldens and Cornwell type authors out there, and as these books deal with the Rome v Carthage battles, i am interested to find out more about them, I was hoping that this series was going to stand out.

As it happens, I will be buying the next book in the series, but I just don't want people to read the reviews the other guys have made and think that this book deserves 5 stars, as it blatantly doesn't, 3 stars is fair in my opinion that is. Overall, a good, if not brilliant read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action packed and exciting 4 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a worthy follow on from his previous book, Ship of Rome. The characters are all fairly well established now and this story carries on from where Ship of Rome ended. Although I cannot vouch for the historical events in which the book is set, the author has created a really exciting story and his action scenes, particularly those at sea, are first class and certainly seem to follow the lead set by Cornwell and Scarrow in the amount of visceral detail that close combat involved. I really liked the book and cannot wait for the next in the series. Highly recommended.

Format:Hardcover
Captain of Rome is a great follow on from Ship of Rome, bringing back all the main characters both fictional and historical in this all action packed adventure on the high seas.John Stack brings to life the sea battle of Cape Ecnomus with great detail.I now rate John Stack right up there with Bernard Cornwell,Conn Iggulden,Harry Sidebottom and Robert Low.I hope there be more adventures with Atticu`s and Septimus in there battles with the Carthaginians.
