Product Description

At first the pairing of Krautrocker Irmin Schmidt and programmer Kumo may seem rather incongruous but one listen to Masters of Confusion, the fruits of their collaborative vision, and the logic of the musical liaison is irresistible. The title of the duo's first joint LP is apposite, not because of any randomised free jazz/improvised rock tendencies or obscurist/chaotic electronic sounds, but because the dust that's thrown up when these two creative but different mindsets meet moves in unexpected and inspiring ways. For the most part, Schmidt plays grand piano--his main instrument but one he never used while with Can. His melodies switch between moods of insouciant improvisation and dense darkness and the clear sound of the instrument forms a neat contrast with Kumo's metronomic rhythmic pulses and versatile electronic moodscapes. Each song is a well thought out composition, often making several diversions within the same piece, with both Schmidt and Kumo taking turns to bring their respective skills to the foreground. An impressive range of moods and sounds are covered throughout the album, from the peaceable to the punchy, ensuring that there's enough aural delight and originality to satisfy even the most demanding listener. --Paul Sullivan

Mood music for cyborgs 3 May 2011

Piano dukes it out with drum machines live on stage, without a net. Kind of cool, kind of crotchety, kind of creepy, elegant, absurd. Track 3 is my favorite.
