The title is a bit of a misnomer nowadays because the book was written in 1984, but this is nevertheless a great series of interviews with the top names in Hollywood cinematography at the time. Schaefer and Salvato approach the subject with respect, research and an obvious passion for cinematography. Once you master the basics of the craft, there is no substitute for learning from the masters, and this book is a great introduction to the roster.
This is not for beginners. You won't learn anything technical about cameras, lights or grip kit. This is for people who have a genuine interest in image-making and realize that there is no book on cinematography worth reading more than a collection of the voices that matter.
An excellent read.
