Each chapter is an exciting, revealing conversation with a well known, talented Director of Photography. A great first hand way to learn why the films you love look the way they do.

A great read 29 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
The title is a bit of a misnomer nowadays because the book was written in 1984, but this is nevertheless a great series of interviews with the top names in Hollywood cinematography at the time. Schaefer and Salvato approach the subject with respect, research and an obvious passion for cinematography. Once you master the basics of the craft, there is no substitute for learning from the masters, and this book is a great introduction to the roster.

This is not for beginners. You won't learn anything technical about cameras, lights or grip kit. This is for people who have a genuine interest in image-making and realize that there is no book on cinematography worth reading more than a collection of the voices that matter.

An excellent read.

It was brilliant when I first read it twenty-odd years ago, and it still is. Recommended for anyone interested in becoming involved in filmmaking.

In this book, you can hear some of the people that are responsible for some of the best moments in film talk about the whys and hows of those moments. All without mystifications or glorifications, just talk about the actual hands-on execution of actual choices made.
