From the dazzling red cover with Downton's Valentino illustration this book offers much and delivers more! A fabulous overview of a rich century of fashion illustration with many familiar names and a few less obvious choices. Including wonderful Drain, Blossac and Peak (but alas, no Rene Gruau). Beautifully illustrated and designed throughout, each era is vividly brought to life by Downton's conversational, yet informative writing style which offers true insights into each artist's work. It's refreshing to have the view of an actual practitioner on a subject he clearly feels passionate about. For fans of Downton there is a gallery of his own work at the end of the book with an interview. A great book for lovers of fashion illustration everywhere!

I love Downton's work - Pourquoi Pas was tremendous, but this latest wonderfully designed book, Masters of Fashion really puts fashion illustration into perspective. It's a great informative read, filled with Downton's influences and contemporaries. This book is beautifully illustrated and printed with images which are not only by Downton, but equally brilliant, unfamiliar names such as Bob Peake, Tom Keogh and Tony Viramontes. Having said that, there were also some fantastic Andy Warhol images that I had never seen before!

I fully recommend it to all designers, fashion students and anyone else interested in fashion, illustration or both!

I bought this book with a little knowledge of the subject and found it a joy. The Artist/ Illustrators David Downton has chosen are a revelation, true masters of their Art. Downtons information on each Artist is revealing and insightful, his knowledge is obviously well researched, and written with passion. Beautifully illustrated, complete with the authors own fashion project at the back of the book, makes this a must for those interested in Fashion, Illustration and Art.

Masters of Fashion Illustration by David Downton - A superb book presenting over 200 colour illustrations of some of the most exciting fashion illustrators of the twentieth century, including: Giovanni Boldini, Carl Erickson, Bernard Blossac, Coby Whitmore, Antonio Lopez and concluding with an interview with David Downton by Tony Glenville. This book is inspirational, however, it is all the better for the inclusion of a series of fashion portraits by Downton, which are stunning examples of the fluency and fluidity of line, capturing the mastery of his work. A true celebration of illustration!

This gorgeous book gives you entree into a rarified world of style & beauty. Packed with stunning images from some of the most original & inspirational fashion illustrators of the last 100 years; Erte, Erickson, Blossac - every page fires your imagination & leaves you breathless, torn between admiration & envy at the brilliance of these masters. The illustrations have been well-chosen by David Downton, (himself an illustrator) whose notes are excellent - fascinating, illuminating, informative; written with the knowledge of a real connoisseur, & the enthusiasm of a true fan.
The design & layout is faultless, the quality superb, from the colour reproduction to the paper. You might expect you could take this for granted with a £30 book, but my shelves are packed with art books costing the same sort of price, where the paper's cheap, the images insipid... this is well worth the money (though I managed to find in perfect condition for £7 [thanks, BooksForLife!]
A rare treat, a rare treasure.

I am no expert on fashion illustration (this was a birthday present), but I have learnt a lot about it from this book. In the last few years fashion illustration has become popular again and David Downton, the author of this book, is one of the people who has helped to bring it back to prominence. This is his selection of the best of fashion illustration from the last 100 years or so and it looks wonderful. His selection is varied and it's interesting to see how styles changed as the decades of the 20th century went past, as a Mad Men fan, I particularly like the work of Bob Peak from the early 60's. There's a lot of work from Downton himself in the book and it's fascinating to see how he absorbed the influences from the other "Masters" in the book to create his own style. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in fashion and it would make a great Christmas present.
