Book Description

3 Sep 2012 1856698394 978-1856698399 Reprint
This lavishly illustrated and beautifully designed book celebrates the colourful lives and dazzling work of the great twentieth-century fashion illustrators, as chosen by one of todays leading fashion artists, David Downton. With a foreword by the legendary model Carmen DellOrefice, the book follows the careers of Downtons favourite artists, from the great social portraitist of the belle époque, Giovanni Boldini, to the architect of 1980s New Wave glamour, Tony Viramontes (including along the way such celebrated names as Erté, Carl Erickson, René Bouché, Andy Warhol and Antonio Lopez). The book concludes with a portfolio of David Downtons own work, featuring drawings of the Paris haute couture shows and portraits of contemporary icons such as Dita Von Teese and Erin OConnor. Many of the stunning images in Masters of Fashion Illustration have not been seen since they were first published.

5.0 out of 5 stars one master in praise of others 16 Dec 2010
By jomo
Format:Hardcover
From the dazzling red cover with Downton's Valentino illustration this book offers much and delivers more! A fabulous overview of a rich century of fashion illustration with many familiar names and a few less obvious choices. Including wonderful Drain, Blossac and Peak (but alas, no Rene Gruau). Beautifully illustrated and designed throughout, each era is vividly brought to life by Downton's conversational, yet informative writing style which offers true insights into each artist's work. It's refreshing to have the view of an actual practitioner on a subject he clearly feels passionate about. For fans of Downton there is a gallery of his own work at the end of the book with an interview. A great book for lovers of fashion illustration everywhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Too good not to have! 1 Oct 2010
By Borka
Format:Hardcover
I love Downton's work - Pourquoi Pas was tremendous, but this latest wonderfully designed book, Masters of Fashion really puts fashion illustration into perspective. It's a great informative read, filled with Downton's influences and contemporaries. This book is beautifully illustrated and printed with images which are not only by Downton, but equally brilliant, unfamiliar names such as Bob Peake, Tom Keogh and Tony Viramontes. Having said that, there were also some fantastic Andy Warhol images that I had never seen before!

I fully recommend it to all designers, fashion students and anyone else interested in fashion, illustration or both!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book 3 Oct 2010
By lcw
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book with a little knowledge of the subject and found it a joy. The Artist/ Illustrators David Downton has chosen are a revelation, true masters of their Art. Downtons information on each Artist is revealing and insightful, his knowledge is obviously well researched, and written with passion. Beautifully illustrated, complete with the authors own fashion project at the back of the book, makes this a must for those interested in Fashion, Illustration and Art.
