4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it's supposed to 25 Oct 2011

I bought one of these items from another retailer a few years ago and was quite glad to see that they were still available from Amazon. Most surge protectors are rather bulky and being white tend to stick out like a sore thumb. The fact that this is free standing (in my opinion) makes it easier to access in if you wanted to plug anything in for occasional use such as a phone charger, laptop charger etc. I've currently got the RJ11 telephone line that goes from my Sky+ HD box running through this surge protector. It's simple to do and works really well.

The original one of these I use for running my router RJ11 cable through and to the phone line and found there to be no loss of download/upload speed like I have experienced with previous surge protectors.

12 sockets does actually sound a lot, but, as with most things there is a downside. Even with some of the sockets being at an angle, you'll not be able to get 2 large sized bulky plugs plugged in next to each other. Another down side is having to put it together. Sounds easy enough but it's a bit fiddly. The large section of it has to sit in a plastic piece. Once you've lined up the cable, you then have to insert both pieces (whilst still attached) into the base part. To do this successfully, you have to try and align the 4 holes with the 4 clips. Once alligned just trying to push it in won't work. You have to give it quite a good smack. Once it clicks its in. Once its in your never going to be able to take it apart again so it's essential you get it right as there's no going back. Damage either one of the 2 base sections and you'll have no way of standing it up. The box it comes in is a decent size so I can't see why the manufacturer didn't just have the base already moulded on as part of the design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good product is this. 1 Dec 2011

Got one of these to help tidy up the mass of wires behind the telly. Its a good sturdy unit, i've got a couple of large plugs towards the top sockets and there's no danger of it toppling over like a cheaper tower i had did.

Price is good too, PC World want near fifty of your hard earned pounds for one of these.

This, alongside some velcro cable tidies, has done the job niceley, would reccomend, but have a look at the belkin eight socket floor adapter with swivel sockets if you're not after as many sockets, its a good alternative.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality 2 Feb 2013

Be warned, the power switch on these is of poor design and can fail. Have two and both their switches have broken from light usage. Also, the sockets are a little too close together which can make it difficult to use all of them.

Bought Belkin since, better quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bigger than I thought... 23 Feb 2013

Delivery & Packaging:
Was delivered 3 days after ordering on Sunday. For some reason the box was placed into another box with packing paper filling the empty space. Whiskers (year old male cat) didn't complain as he was promptly jumping around and ruffling inside the box- then dozed off in it :P

It was a bit difficult extracting the item from the box, as such many bits went flying over the floor.

Looks professional (or business-y as my brother commented), and isn't an eye-sore. I'd recommend using cable-sheaths alongside this product to hide any plethora of cables.

The sockets themselves are a bit tough to get plugs into, but not TOO tough, something I wish all my sockets were. This lets me know they wont come out easily- a good thing if you have little ones in your home.
The lights could be a tad brighter, but they are easily viewable. The switch however lets this down, it's quite wobbly but it gets the job done.

I've also got my Ethernet cable plugged into the SP and can say I've not witnessed a drop in speeds.
NOTE: the product comes with a 2m (I think) Ethernet (RJ45) and 2m (again, think) phone (RJ11) cable.

Yes! I don't think this product has any cons aside the dodgy button.

If you DO for whatever reason decide to detach the base, you'll need a small but long flat head phillips screwdriver, slide it up into the holes and de-clip the 4 clips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tower. 13 Dec 2012
By K. A. Newton TOP 500 REVIEWER

Sat down at 9.05am on Tuesday this week and signed in to check my emails - I have to say here the laptop was less than 3 weeks old.

There was a sudden "POP" and a flash of light. My computer kept running though the internet went.
I looked around and found my router had no lights and my phone charger had lost its light too.

I found an old basic extension and found my router was working ok. My phone charger and phone were ok.

This meant that my surge protected 6 way extension had commited hari-kari to protect my equipment. The old extension was getting on for nearly nine years old so it had me served well.

I chose this tower model as it also included sockets for the phone wire/router 2 sockets both for standard BT plugs. It also takes Lan/Ethernet plugs whch have their own 2 sockets.

I got two lengths of cable with the Tower, one is Lan/Etheret at each end and the other cable has a BT plug and the square shaped fitting that fits my router. (Like Lan/Etheret but smaller - RJ.11).

Both leads are coloured black. I have had to buy a long BT cable with a BT plug at each end this will plug into the tower and the other lead BT plug at the Tower end and plugging in my router with the RJ.11.

12 sockets 5 on each side at staggered angles. One at bottom front and back. The plug you push in the bottom front socket needs to be chosen carefully as if the plug has a lead hanging downwards the base gets in the way of the lead. The socket at the bottom at the back likewise but not as much. I have my router's plug in that as the lead comes out of the top of the router plug.

One reviewer has said about putting LARGE plugs next to each other.
