Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Mastering Visual Basic 6.0 Development introduces readers to the bread and butter of the Visual Basic programmer: Database access programs. With lots of detailed prose and many laboratory exercises, the authors help illuminate the new VB6 ways of connecting users to data. The authors combine excellent documentation of the VB6 development environment with solid explanations of certain features of the VB language itself. They give particularly heavy attention to the mechanics of creating an ActiveXcontrol (including data-bound ones) and to the relatively new ActiveX DataObjects (ADO) strategy for managing connections to data repositories. The book earns its keep with its clear explanations of these topics alone.

The authors' explanatory material combines descriptive prose with precise procedures, screen shots, and lists of options. They include some code listings, too, mostly utility subroutines that readers can borrow. The real strength of this book lies in its liberal use of hands-on exercises (based on the contents of the companion CD-ROM) as a means of helping the reader understand the VB6 language and development environment. Though the hands-on exercises sometimes seem contrived (which, after all, they are),they serve their purpose of familiarising the reader with various aspects of VB6. Readers will know what to look for in reference books after they work through the demonstrations presented here. --David Wall,amazon.com

Topics covered: Data tools that ship with Visual Basic 6, ComponentObject Model (COM) modules, ActiveX controls, ActiveX Data Objects (ADO),and VB data-access programs on the Internet.

Product Description

"Microsoft "R" Mastering: Microsoft "R" Visual Basic "R" 6.0 Development" offers skills-focused instruction for creating database applications using components. Intermediate-level developers work through the curriculum in print and online. As they progress through essential development topics -- including visual data access tools, class modules, ActiveX controls, ActiveX Data Objects, COM components, Internet programming, and application deployment -- the hands-on lab exercises reinforce learning and provide practical experience with programming tasks. By the end of the course, students have created a full-featured database solution. The Microsoft Mastering CD-ROM contains the interactive lessons narrated demonstrations, and complete source code.

Considering this book is written by MS it isn't very comprehensive. The subjects are only briefly covered and there is no full explanation as to why you're doing something, just the fact that you have to. Also, a really annoying part is the constant paragraphs which say "For more information on.....please refer to the Visual Basic help files". Come on Microsoft what do we need the book for if it's all in the help files? The book also claims to get you to create a full featured database solution, well, to say that's a bit liberal with the truth is an under statement. I have several years VB programming experience and bought the book with a view to sitting my MCP, if this is the level of programming required to pass an MCP I wish I had saved my money on the book and just sat the exam. In spite of what I have just said, if you're at an intermediate level and want to learn how to use ActiveX and ADO then the book should prove useful. Another plus is that the CD which accompanies the book has all the samples, demos and labs which are used in the book as well as some intuitive multimedia tutorials.

The content of this book is basically the MS 1013 course as provided by numerous training centres. Whilst the course itself doesn't give you everything you need for the exam, it is quite good.

Buy the book - it's far cheaper than the course from a training centre....

Good Book For Preparation of MCSD 29 Oct 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I used this book to prepare the MCSD exam, I found it is better than the MS MCSD Training Kit. However, it doesn't cover Visual Sourcesafe and uses SQL server 6.5 instead of 7.0 as lab materials.

Not enough to pass the exam 22 April 2000
By Sherri Kaye Sneed - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I passed the exam by using this book in addition to other materials.

I thought that this book was very good in providing information on every topic. I especially loved building an application from beginning to end. But if you are purchasing it to pass the 70-176 exam, you will need additional material. For example, combining this with MSDN and Transcender is a pretty good combination. I also purchased New Riders MCSD Training Guide. It provided a lot of detail and was quite helpful as well.

Supplement this with something else. 7 Dec 1999
By Rob Lawrence - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have sworn by MS Press books for all my certification exams and have to say that this one is by far the most disappointing. I found it to be too superficial to be of much benefit. It works as a decent complement to other resources, but can't really be a primary resource itself.
