Mastering Unreal Technology v1 is without a doubt the best resource for getting ahead in Unreal Engine 3. As the owner of a good many "how to" books on a range of different subjects, I have rather a good idea of what makes a good tutorial book - and this one ticks every box.

The tutorials are designed with practical examples in mind to work towards, and are cleverly divided into chapters which tackle specific areas. First of all, you run through a hands-on primer, which handholds you through creating a simple level which touches on most of the features of the Unreal Editor.

Later, the book goes into more depth with individual chapters devoted to each element of the editor - with sections on detailed brush geometry, static meshes, textures and more. It even encompasses areas of 3ds Max.

I can't recommend the 3D Buzz guys enough, I'd already had a bit of experience with them before thanks to the Unreal Tournament 3 Collectors Edition DVD, so I knew they'd be quite good - and off the back of this book I'm going to buy the next two in the series, as well as their 3ds Max tutorials.

If you want to get ahead, you don't need to look much further. 5 stars all the way.

Great stuff!! 7 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
this book really helps you get to grips with the unreal engine. I used it for the udk, which is basically the same and now I know the ins and outs of the engine.

The main focus of this book seems to be geared at designers or 3d artists, addressing issues with integrating models and meshes into scenes.

If you're a programmer then this book will be useful in teaching what the engine is like/capable of, but you won't have access to the source code anyway (in the non-commercial versions...) and you need to learn a scripting language called unreal kismet, taught in one of the other volumes.

The main emphasis in learning is learn by doing. most of the time the book expects that you have the engine open in front of you to play with as you follow its instructions.

overall a great piece of work!

A Must For A Beginner 22 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
When I saw this book on Amazon, I hesitated to order it because of it was named "Introduction". As a UDK user, I already knew some fundamental things in UE. Then, I decided to give it a try and ordered it.

The very first thing That surprised me When I received my copy was the thickness of the book. I have to say That It was huge. I do not want to say that all the books having too many pages are enough good. So I began to follow the book with its DVD containing sample levels and other files which are totally dedicated to chapters of the book.

This book is realy amazing. All the topics and chapters are supported many examples and tutorials. Do not think that you know how to navigate in 3d views of Unreal Engine. There are too many new topics and tips , even for importing new assets into the scene. There is also a chapter about creating game assets in 3d Studio Max. Remember, this book is all about Unreal engine.

There is a deep section which is dedicated to material system and workflow of the engine. The book teaches you how to create your very own new materials and how to implament them into the engine in a succesfull way. I can also say that Asset Creation and Static Meshes section has also very satisfied workflow .

Once and for all, I want to declare some decreases for this book. The most important one is skelatal meshes. Do not expect to learn something about this subject from this book. For the second one, I have to say that It is to bad not to see a chapter which is about Phat aditor and creating physic assets in Unreal Engine. It would be nice to see a simple introduction chapter in the book.

I realy like the book and I have learned too many things from it. I highly reccomend you to get it even if you thing you now the basics of the engine. If you are a beginner, this book becomes a must to take place on your book shelf.

Best Regards;

Ozan ÜNLÜ
