Good Design, Down to the Letter

Packages on store shelves, posters on building walls, pages of a website—all contain information that needs to be communicated. And at the heart of that communication is type: visually interesting, interactive, expressive and captivating. Each letter must come alive; therefore, each letter must be carefully crafted or chosen. A solid foundation in typography, as well as an understanding of its nuances, will help you optimize your visual communication—in whatever form it takes.

By breaking down the study of type into a systematic progression of relationships—letter, word, sentence, paragraph, page and screen—award-winning graphic designer and professor of communication design Denise Bosler provides a unique and illuminating perspective on typography for both print and digital media and for designers of all skill levels.

Through instruction, interviews and real-world inspiration, Mastering Type explores the power of each typographic element--both as it stands alone and as it works with other elements--to create successful design, to strengthen your skill set and to inspire your next project.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, logical introduction to typography 8 Sep 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I like the way this book is organised. After a general introduction there are chapters on Letter, Word, Sentence, Paragraph, Page and Screen so you are hand-held from start to finish. After each chapter there is a interview with a "designer" which includes many examples of his/her work. The approach is thorough and the points are well illustrated eg, with text boxes comparing bad and good layouts. My only reservation is that, because it is an American book and - I guess - targetted at American readers, some of the recommendations do not reflect British practice (eg punctuation in quotation marks). Also, units are in imperial measure rather than metric (this includes paper sizing).

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential guide to typography 29 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover
As a freelance designer, I know only too well that typography is often very much an afterthought, a bolt-on to a design rather than the focus of such. Ms Bosler demonstrates clearly and entertainingly in her book why this needs to change, and shows just what a huge difference good typography can make to a design.

Filled with illustrations and photographs on every page, providing masses of examples to illustrate her points, Mastering Type is an essential guide for anyone either working in the design industry or interested in good, creative design.

The book is broken down into easily understandable sections - letter, word, sentence, paragraph, page and screen - covering every aspect of typographic design, suitable for either working professionals or creative amateurs, and within the book are interviews with the top designers in the field, discussing their own approaches to typography and peppered with examples of their work.

On top of all of this, it's also a beautiful coffee table book, filled with gorgeous typograpy and massive amounts of inspiration. Anyone serious about graphic design, or even just curious about how to go about creating imaginative graphics, really needs to read this book.

Hugely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mastering type By Denise Bosler 12 Oct 2012

Mastering type
(The Essential Guide to Typography for Print and Web Design)

By Denise Bosler

My first impressions of the book is that it is very promising, the striking colour scheme,
gets it noticed, the red, black and white, just pulled me in. I just love
looking at all the ways, type is used and laid out, and that definitely is what you
see in this book Mastering Type by Denise Bosler.
The book starts off telling you a bit of history about type and how cave paintings
were the first ways to comunicate, the Egyptians using pictures/hieroglyphics.
This is all very interesting but don't be put off so soon, the book then goes in to
full bounce and starts telling you about how type, and the old printing presses and
how art, comes into contact with the fonts.

The book is split up into chapters History, Letter, word, sentence, paragraph,
page, screen. After each chapter there is a interview with a designer
that shows you examples of the work, they have created, which I think is a
nice touch. For each picture there is also an "about the images in this chapter page"
telling you about the title, Design, Designer, Font used, and the client this was for,
which was very informative.

Type and fonts you may think are just black and white, but the book has loads
of colour pictures and photos, showing how type is placed on posters, leaflets,
and books, Throughout the book you come across Good and Bad paragraphs, useful
if you're not that good at layout, the last chapter, `screen' is about web pages,
how to use a grid system to position text and pictures for web design.
