About the Author

Liz Staley

Liz Staley first started writing and illustrating stories when she was young. Her first novel was written by hand in a Marble composition book in middle school. In high school, she began to write another novel, the first book of that series was then published ten years later as The Hinomoto Rebellion. In 2010, she began her first long-form story webcomic, Adrastus. The giant robot love letter in comic form ignited a strong passion for comics as a story-telling form.

Aside from drawing and writing stories, Liz also loves to play role-playing games, read, watch cartoons from the 80s and 90s, and go for long walks. She lives in Western Pennsylvania with her very supportive husband, Byron.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a good beginners book 12 Sep 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It's a good beginners book, for myself I wanted an alternative to the crappy Manga Studio 5 PDF manual that is a terrible mess to try to understand, the book is well written but lack a lot of information, just one example is that very often there is some setting with many different choices and she tells the reader to use option "x" without any hint on why and no description of what the other options do, but as I said, for a beginner I think it's a pretty ok book, as an alternative reference it is not enough, you still need the PDF manual.

The actual contents of the book is good and there are few errors in the text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for Smith Micro's latest manga software 21 Jan 2014
By Digi-fish - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
When I recently upgraded from Manga Studio 4 EX to 5 EX, I found there were a lot of things that were different. Manga Studio 5 not only had a new interface, but also a new approach for accessing all the tools you needed.

While Liz makes it clear that this is not a book for beginners, I have found it to be a much better reference and resource than the free downloadable manuals on Smith Micro's website. It really helped me settle into Manga Studio 5's new interface. However I must point out, I had just come from using Photoshop and the previous version of Manga Studio. So this book may not suit someone who has never used art or graphic design software before.

I have been looking for a "Manga Studio 5 for Dummies", however it appears that title does not exist at the current time. This would have to be the closest compromise. Liz explains every icon and detail in each chapter so that you can easily follow along, with extra tips and notes, almost like a Dummies book. Still, I recommend you either pick up and flip through a physical copy (if you can find one) or download a free sample before deciding whether this book will be right for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great explanations with practical examples 3 Dec 2013
By kazillo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a very impressive book. Like the author, I too am a big fan of Manga Studio and the recently released EX 5 is the third version of this drawing and painting application that I've used. The author knows her way around this application, plus she writes in a friendly and engaging manner. She takes a detailed look at the many new brush variables of version 5, which I appreciate because, in my opinion, MS is better than more well-known painting apps. Her reasoning for using the Multiply Combine Mode for pencils is one I hadn't considered before and her use of the Mix color tab for controlling flesh tones is brilliant. This is the first book about a digital illustration app that I've seen addressing the differences between left- and right-handed setups and there are several other features which I'll be revisiting, after reading her reasons for incorporating them into her workflow.
Finally, a list of "Podcasts to listen to while working" in the Appendix is a great idea because I think an illustrator drawing without a podcast or music in the background is like a baseball without seams. I've gladly added this book to my reference library.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to start in one book 10 Mar 2014

Though I feel that the digital book is a bit overpriced, the book itself is excellent.
Manga studio 5 doesn't have a lot of tutorials or books out there and this one does show you around.
While I do feel the "mastering" part is a bit exaggerated, this book is a valuable source to show you around and eliminate any confusions you have about what Manha studio can or cannot do.
I'm glad I picked up the book and recommend it as your first step to mastering manga studio
