Product Description

Review

"SPC is a tremendously valuable tool for understanding the performance and capability of any process. We are using it as a basic building block in driving continuous improvement in the wide range of services we deliver. However, it can be very difficult to get managers and employees to buy into the concept and there is a real need for this practitioners "how to" book. It gives just enough theory to explain the "why" but concentrates on two important "hows" - how to construct charts and, more importantly, how to use them to drive performance improvement. Busy practitioners will appreciate the readable style as well as the case studies and I will certainly be recommending it to managers in my organisation."

Ronald Skea, Organizational Development Manager, Dundee City Council

Product Description

Mastering Statistical Process Control shows how to understand business or process performance more clearly and more effectively. This practical book is based on a rich and varied selection of case studies from across industry and commerce, including material from the manufacturing, extractive and service sectors. It will enable readers to understand how SPC can be used to maximum effect, and will deliver more effective monitoring, control and improvement in systems, processes and management.

The common obstacle to successful use of SPC is getting bogged down with control charts, forgetting that visual representation of data is but a tool and not an end in itself. Mastering SPC demonstrates how statistical tools are applied and used in reality. This is a book that will open up the power of SPC for many: managers, quality professionals, engineers and analysts, as well as students, will welcome the clarity and explanation that it brings to understanding the use and benefit of SPC in a wide range of engineering, production and service situations.

Key case studies include using SPC to:
· Measure quality and human factors
· Monitor process performance accurately over long periods
· Develop best-practice benchmarks using control charts
· Maximise profitability of fixed assets
· Improve customer service and satisfaction

* Shows how your business, process and profitability can benefit from process management and control
* SPC is widely used and widely misunderstood. This is the only book to take an applications based approach to SPC
* Ideal for managers, process engineers and quality personnel in both manufacturing and service sectors, as well as students of management, statistics, operations research, MBAs and Six Sigma candidates

This is a book for individuals who require to interpret data, which is surely the vast majority of us managers. We leave ourselves wide open to misjudge figures when we rely on tabulated data. The author has kept the technical side of SPC to a minimum, choosing instead to give us an insight through many and varied case studies. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of looking at the data and following logic of SPC in providing greater understanding. I enjoyed the game I played with myself of interpreting the data before Tim applied SPC logic - I was invariably wrong. Tim also had me smiling at a section on how to spot when someone is falsifying data. In the age of targets and budgets, so many of us are being forced into the skill of doctoring the figures we submit. I dream of the day when we work with undoctored information which is interpreted with real skill and we secure a deep understanding of the system in which we all work. This is an excellent book for the practical manager.
