Product Description

Product Description
Explains the opening in terms of typical plans and themes.

From the Publisher
A favourite opening of club and tournament players
The Sicilian Defence, famed for its exciting counter-attacking potential, has long enjoyed great popularity at all levels of play, from club amateur to world champion.

In this instructive book, part of the acclaimed Batsford 'Mastering the Openings' series, International Master Dr Danny Kopec explains the Sicilian from Black's point of view in terms of pawn structures, tactical themes and plans, rather than dense analysis of specific lines of play.

By going through the mastery lessons, step by step, the reader will gain true understanding of the ideas behind the main variations of the Sicilian and the confidence to progress thereafter to a study of more advanced theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent tutorial guide for the sicilian, 17 Jul 2008
By gjb (England) - See all my reviews
I bought this book some time ago and still use it as a reference guide. It covers a number of well established sicilian systems - namely The Scheveningen, The Dragon, The Richter-Rauzer, The Boleslavsky, The Najdorf and The Kan and it's Relatives. Each of these sections is split into lessons (in some cases upto twelve lessons). Each lesson consists of one or more illustrated master/grandmaster games.

I appreciate Danny Kopec's annotation of the games and the logical way the book is layed out. For instance each chapter starts with the intended pawn structure for a given system and attempts to explain the plans for Black before moving onto the games.

While being very focused on the above sicilian systems, the book really only covers other sicilian openings very briefly. For instance, the section on the "Grand Prix Attack" is only two pages long and again, the c3 sicilian is about the same. However, for the intermediate player these are good introductions.

Above all this book provides vital instruction for players who are considering using the Sicilian as Black.
