More About the Author

I started teaching English Language, as many teachers do, just a few steps ahead of the students. My BA and MA were in English Literature (King's College, London), so it was in at the deep end with lots of reading to keep me afloat. 'Mastering Advanced English Language' was the result of this experience. There were all kinds of reference books, but few showed me how to use my new-found knowledge. I wanted my book to get readers involved in the process of analysis, using grammar to explore how meaning is created.

Ever since, I've been on the language trail - it's compulsive! Once you start looking at words, you can't stop. I've worked with teachers who want to make students excited about language, lectured on A level language topics, produced online materials, and worked with an exam board. All exciting and challenging experiences convincing me that language study is where everything begins.

'Mastering Practical Grammar' is designed to make readers feel that they too can become language experts. The grammar is covered in more detail and there are lots of sample texts and commentaries. There's also a blog designed to run alongside the book, with exercises to test your knowledge and regular posts on topical language issues. You can follow the most recent post from the twitter link on this page or go to SaraThorneEnglishLanguage.com.

To finish, I would just like to say a very big thank you to my family - I pinch what they say and what they write to fill my pages with real-life (copyright-free) material!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mastering Practial Grammar 28 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Recommended for teachers, useful to clarify certain points and for definitions. Also for university students studying English Language. It may be a bit intensive for the average A level student unless they are very committed.
