More About the Author

I started teaching English Language, as many teachers do, just a few steps ahead of the students. My BA and MA were in English Literature (King's College, London), so it was in at the deep end with lots of reading to keep me afloat. 'Mastering Advanced English Language' was the result of this experience. There were all kinds of reference books, but few showed me how to use my new-found knowledge. I wanted my book to get readers involved in the process of analysis, using grammar to explore how meaning is created.

Ever since, I've been on the language trail - it's compulsive! Once you start looking at words, you can't stop. I've worked with teachers who want to make students excited about language, lectured on A level language topics, produced online materials, and worked with an exam board. All exciting and challenging experiences convincing me that language study is where everything begins.

'Mastering Practical Grammar' is designed to make readers feel that they too can become language experts. The grammar is covered in more detail and there are lots of sample texts and commentaries. There's also a blog designed to run alongside the book, with exercises to test your knowledge and regular posts on topical language issues. You can follow the most recent post from the twitter link on this page or go to

To finish, I would just like to say a very big thank you to my family - I pinch what they say and what they write to fill my pages with real-life (copyright-free) material!

Product Description

'This book has an enormous amount to recommend it. Its strengths are the detailed coverage of technical aspects of poetry and the subsequent survey of English poetry from its beginnings through to the present day. The extremely helpful commentaries give readers a clear idea of how to express their thoughts about poetry and to link these to closer linguistic and stylistic analyses.' - Kim Ballard, Course Leader for A-Level English Language at Esher College, Surrey, UK, and Chief Examiner for A-Level English Language for seven years

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Chas. Dickens on 26 Nov. 2013
Format: Paperback
This is a DULL book, I'm afraid, and not calculated to help students enjoy poetry: the heart sinks as it encounters yet another didactic section. In addition, there are some factual errors ( Hopkins' poems were published by Browning 29 years after H's death, not 19) and some doubtful readings of poems which are passed off as definitive ( e.g., Christina Rossetti's "A Birthday").

Beyond excellence! 14 April 2013

The aforementioned Editorial Review and Book Description are indeed accurate, but I rate this book far above that horizon! The material within illustrates the author's profound knowledge on all aspects of poetry and prose. She transcends excellence in her approach to detail and clarity. Historical backgrounds assigned to each century and country are complimentary to the particular poet discussed, and beautifully provide further understanding of each poet's subject matter and style. Ranging from the earliest Old English to twentieth century poetry, the author addresses details with supreme authority.
